One dead, two injured in fatal stabbing outside Phish show in Virginia

One person was killed and two more injured in a stabbing that took place outside a Phish show at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia.

On Friday night (September 19), police responded to a violent altercation just after 9:30pm, according to a police report from the Hampton Police Division seen by Rolling Stone.

According to the report, the suspect fled the scene, but detectives have so far managed to identify “all parties involved” in investigations into the “isolated incident.” At the time of writing, a suspect has not yet been identified.

Phish addressed the incident in a statement shared to Instagram, saying that while they “don’t have more information than what has been reported by the police,” the band was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy.

“During last night’s show, a tragic incident took place in the parking lot outside Hampton Coliseum,” the band wrote. “There was an altercation behind one of the tents in the unofficial vending area in which someone lost their life and two other people were injured.

“We don’t have more information than what has been reported by the police, who called it an isolated incident, but what we do know is upsetting enough. We are deeply saddened by this and our hearts go out to all of those affected.”

As detailed by Cpl. Shaun Stalnaker in the police report, the first victim was transported to a local hospital after the incident, where he later succumbed to his injuries. “The second victim was also transported and is currently receiving medical treatment,” he said, adding: “A third adult male victim later arrived at a local hospital as a walk-in, also suffering from a laceration determined to be non-life-threatening.”

Phish was performing at the Hampton Coliseum as part of their soon-to-wrap tour, which continued over the weekend with tonight’s (September 21) gig marking the final night of their summer run.

Elsewhere, earlier this year, the Rock Hall announced the inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class of 2025. While the likes of The White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper, OutKast, Soundgarden and more are being honoured later this year, fans were shocked to discover that Phish will not be inducted this year.

Many later took to social media to hit out at the snub, which was all the more surprising given the band led the Rock Hall’s fan vote by a huge lead, scoring a whopping 330,000 votes compared to runner-up Bad Company, who scored 281,000 votes.
