Noah Kahan Brings Out Chappell Roan for Surprise ‘California’ Performance at Rose Bowl Show

Noah Kahan welcomed Chappell Roan for a surprise performance during his sold-out headlining show at Rose Bowl Stadium.

The Pasadena, California, show on Saturday (Aug. 15) marked the singer-songwriter’s biggest headlining performance to date, drawing more than 56,000 fans to the famed venue as part of his Great Divide World Tour.

Early in his 27-song set, Kahan expressed his gratitude to the Los Angeles crowd and teased Roan’s appearance.

“I remember playing at Troubadour and being happy if that was the rest of my career,” the singer said of the 500-capacity venue in West Hollywood. “I’m grate as f—k to be here with y’all.”

The “Stick Season” singer was then interrupted by a ringing payphone onstage. “Hello, God?” he responded after picking up the receiver. “Oh, you think because it’s my biggest headline show ever that as some point I should bring out a super special guest?”

As promised, Kahan later welcomed Roan to the stage for a duet of “California,” from her 2023 debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. The song proved especially fitting, as it recounts Roan’s journey from Missouri to Los Angeles in pursuit of a music career.

“Noah always stands up for me, seriously,” she told the crowd after giving Kahan a fist bump. “He’s a good person, for real.”

Before launching into the acoustic number, Kahan said, “This is the first song I ever heard of Kayleigh’s [Roan’s real first name] and the reason I fell in love with her music, and I’m just really proud of her and thankful that she would come sing with me. So this is ‘California.’”

Kahan’s set also featured songs from his breakthrough album Stick Season, including “Dial Drunk,” “Northern Attitude” and the title track, alongside “The Great Divide,” “Orbiter,” “American Cars” and other tracks from his latest album, The Great Divide, which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Kahan is currently on his The Great Divide world tour, with a stop at San Diego’s Petco Park on Monday (Aug. 17). The North American leg concludes Aug. 31 at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park, followed by international dates beginning this fall.
