The track, which was written by Cyrus’s brother Braison, marks the first time she has collaborated with the indie folk band.
Forged around a distinctively melancholy piano, ‘Don’t Put It All On Me’ sees Cyrus’s country and pop roots intertwine as she explores themes of “longing and reconnection”, per a press release. “The holy ghost he only knows/As much as you’re willing to tell,” the duo harmonise in the pre-chorus.
Speaking on the track’s production, Cyrus shared: “I have always been the observer in our family, and Braison wrote about how I tend to carry the weight of that on my shoulders.”
It comes alongside a Luis Villanueva-directed music video infused with a heavy dose of magical realism. Check it out below.
A press release promises “more exciting news to come” in regards to Cyrus’s new music, which she says she wants “to offer fans a sense of comforting, peaceful nostalgia.”
“That’s something that I feel so heavily when I listen to music. We all want to connect with our past while also being aware of the present moment. Music does that for me, and this new collection of songs was made with that in mind,” she says. “I want to evoke that feeling of a comforting friend that a song can be — and allow us all to heal.”
Her debut album ‘The Hardest Part’ was released in 2022, which followed the collaborative EP ‘People Don’t Change’ with P.J. Harding in April 2021. The EP garnered a four-star review from NME, with reviewer Rhian Daly calling it “a gorgeous leap forward in the youngest Cyrus’ ever-evolving story”.
