Nightclub that inspired Gorillaz’ ‘Andromeda’ to be turned into flats

It has been announced that Andromeda, the nightclub that inspired Gorillaz‘s track of the same name, will be turned into flats.

The club – located in St Helen’s Lane, Colchester – will be converted into five brand new apartments. Andromeda was first opened in the 1960s, providing a dance space for roughly 195 people, and closed in 2021 after a short stint operating under the name “Ice”.

‘Andromeda’, the virtual band’s song, was released back in March 2017 and featured on their fifth album ‘Humanz‘. The following year, it received a nomination for Best Dance Recording at the 2018 Grammy Awards.

Gorillaz creator Damon Albarn previously said that the nightclub was a special place for listening to soul music during his youth. According to the BBC, Colchester City Council has approved of the planning and said work must begin within three years.

The two-storey building was purchased at auction back in April and blueprints for the forthcoming apartment construction showed that all five flats would all contain one bedroom.

“The proposal removes a commercial night club that can reasonably be considered to have reached a discordant position with the majority residential location that no [sic] surrounds it,” the plans read (as per BBC).

In other Gorillaz news, a crowdfunder was recently launched to support the cancer treatment of Peven Everett, the Chicago house singer, producer and Gorillaz collaborator.

“Trying to raise money for my friend Peven who needs treatment for lung cancer. Any donation will help. The cost of treatments is mounting,” a description on the crowdfunding page reads.
