Mumford & Sons are back with a new song, “Rushmere,” the title track from their first album in seven years, out March 28 via Glassnote.
The song is vintage stomp-and-holler festival folk, with Marcus Mumford’s vocals sailing over thumping drums and the ceaseless tumble of acoustic guitar and banjo. “Light me up I’m wasted in the dark,” Mumford sings on the hook, “Rushmere restless hearts in the end/Get my head out of the ground/Time don’t let us down again.”
As a press release note, Rushmere is the name of a pond in Wimbledon Common in southwest London, which is where Mumford, Ben Lovett, and Ted Dwane hung out and first started to conceive of putting a band together. The album was made over the past couple years, with the band calling this period “the most prolific two years we’ve ever had” in a short statement on Instagram.
“We have a lot of songs to share with you… and it all begins where we started, really, with ‘Rushmere.’ We’re restless to get going, releived and excited to share this first one with you.”
Mumford & Sons recorded Rushmere with producer Dave Cobb at RCA Studio A in Nashville, as well as in Savannah, Georgia and at Mumford’s own studio in Devon, England. The album notably marks the group’s first as a trio following the departure of Winston Marshall, who left the band partly over political differences with his bandmates.
Mumford & Sons released their last album, Delta, in 2018, and since then they’ve only shared a handful of singles, including the Delta outtake “Blind Leading the Blind” and an early demo of album track “Forever.” Mumford himself also released his debut solo album, Self-Titled, in 2022.
In 2023, the band teamed up with Noah Kahan at Austin City Limits to debut a new song “Maybe,” but the track never got an official release (nor does it appear on the Rushmere tracklist). Then last year, Mumford & Sons linked up with Pharrell for a new song, “Good People.” The song also featured Native Vocalists, a six-piece vocal choir, with members hailing from Native American Tribes within the Northern Great Plains in the U.S. and Canada.
