Monica Praises Ariana Grande for Making ‘Boy Is Mine’ Remix ‘Something That’s Her Own’

Monica is giving Ariana Grande her flowers for how she approached remaking “That Boy Is Mine,” her classic song with Brandy. In an interview with People, the R&B star said that working with Grande on “The Boy Is Mine,” and reconnecting with Brandy, was “nothing short of a blessing.”

“I love the fact that she did not try to remake it in the form that both Brandy and I made it in, but she created something that’s her own and she used nostalgic moments from the record,” Monica said. “That’s what made it such a no-brainer for me because it felt good.”

Brandy, who also spoke with People, described Grande as a “kind and talented soul,” adding that she and the Eternal Sunshine singer “just hit it off” right away. “There is no one that does what she does with more grace and appreciation,” she said.

As for the R&B powerhouse reunion on the song, Monica added: “[Brandy] and I had not seen each other for many years, so it gave us the opportunity to talk not just about the song, but life as a whole.”

Grande’s “The Boy is Mine” with Brandy and Monica is nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 2025 Grammys, against Beyoncé and Post Malone’s “Levii’s Jeans”, Gracie Abrams and Taylor Swift’s “Us”, Charli XCX and Billie Eilish’s “Guess,” and Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’s “Die With a Smile.” (Grande’s album Eternal Sunshine is also nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album.)

Shortly after the song dropped in June, Monica spoke to Entertainment Tonight about “closing the gaps” of her relationship with Brandy. “When you properly communicate something, you can find not only the resolutions and solutions to problemsm, but sometimes you find that there weren’t ever problems, just consistent miscommunications,” Monica said at the time.

Grande shared her excitement for the collaboration in an Instagram post ahead of its release, writing “It is near impossible to say how much this means to me. This is in celebration of you both and the impact that you have had on every vocalist, vocal producer, musician, artist that is creating today.”
