Meghan Trainor Explains Why She Had Baby No. 3 Via Surrogate: ‘We Had Endless Conversations With Our Doctors’

Meghan Trainor is shedding light on why she and husband Daryl Sabara chose to welcome their third child via surrogate amid backlash online.

In a statement to People posted Wednesday (Jan. 21) — one day after the singer announced that her new baby, a daughter named Mikey Moon, had arrived — Trainor explained that surrogacy wasn’t the couple’s “first choice,” but ended up being the best option for them. “We had endless conversations with our doctors on this journey, and this was the safest way for us to be able to continue growing our family,” she told the publication.

“We are forever grateful for that option,” she continued. “I want people to know that surrogacy is just another beautiful way to build a family. It’s not something to whisper about or judge. It’s rooted in trust, science, love, and teamwork.”

The musician first revealed that she had welcomed her first girl and third child overall by posting a picture of herself holding her newborn on Instagram. Though many of her friends and fans were quick to congratulate her, Trainor also experienced a surge of negativity online from people baselessly claiming that the Grammy winner had gone the surrogacy route so as not to gain weight via pregnancy — even though she was transparent about her choice in her caption.

“Our baby girl Mikey Moon Trainor has finally made it to the world thanks to our incredible, superwoman surrogate,” Trainor wrote Tuesday (Jan. 20). “We are forever grateful to all the doctors, nurses, teams who made this dream possible. We had endless conversations with our doctors in this journey and this was the safest way for us to be able to continue growing our family.”

Trainor and the Spy Kids star are also parents to two sons, four-year-old Riley and two-year-old Barry. In her book Dear Future Mama, the hitmaker detailed the terrifying experience of Riley being rushed to the NICU moments after she gave birth to him.

In her statement to People, Trainor emphasized: “Every family’s journey looks different, and all of them are extremely valid.”
