Måneskin’s Damiano David on going solo: “It’s something I am really proud of “

Måneskin‘s Damiano David has opened up about his forthcoming solo venture and the future of the Italian rock band.

The frontman attended 2024 MTV VMAs last night in New York where he served as one of the many presenters of the night. While on the red carpet, the singer took the time to speak about his new solo venture which will be released on September 27.

While chatting with The Associated Press at the award show, David said: “I’ve been working for a long, long time on a new project and September 27 is the date of release so I would love everyone to stay tuned.”

After being asked about the difference between a solo mindset versus a band mindset, the vocalist shared: “Oh, this would be a long talk. You’ll see, there’s going to be a lot of new things.

He also discussed the future of Måneskin, adding: “The band is great. We are going to work on stuff. Nothing is going to change.”

David also spoke to Billboard on the carpet and shared that his new venture is “Something I’ve been working on for a lot of time and I am very proud of so I really can’t wait for the day to come.”

His bandmate, Måneskin’s Victoria De Angelis – who also recently announced her solo project and debut single ‘Get Up Bitch (Shake Ya Ass)’ featuring Anitta – was also in attendance at the VMAs last night and opened up to NME about the future of the band and put down any speculation on the disbandment of the group.

“We just finished our tour a couple of weeks ago and it went amazing so now we are just having a little ‘chill moment’, but of course, we are not done,” she told us.

Earlier this week, the singer shared a cryptic teaser on Instagram which showed him kitted out in a full suit, walking towards a private car in gloomy weather. Upon getting into the car, the driver asks him where he is looking to go, to which he gives the ambiguous answer: “Everywhere”. While it isn’t yet clear if the title ‘Everywhere’ alludes to a new single, album or even a new band for the vocalist.

Today (September 12), the singer shared a new teaser for his solo venture on his Instagram account. The clip picks up from where the first cryptic teaser left off and sees the singer sitting in the back of a private car from the perspective of someone looking into his window.  “My name is Damiano David. I was born in 1999, Rome, Italy. I love music, arts and women. I love the feeling of beautiful clothes and the smell of a nice perfume. In my life I’ve been a thief, a liar, a lover, a shapeshifter,” he says in backing audio.

He continued: “I travelled all around the world to find my voice, just to end up where everything’s started. My name is Damiano David and today is the first day of my life.” David also shared an Instagram story of the ink to the monologue heard in the clip on Spotify.

Last year, David opened up about the prospect of going solo, and said that he could imagine it being both “a very healthy thing and a very destructive thing”.

“If I ever have the chance to do a solo project, I have to keep in my mind that it’s thanks to everything I did with the band. That’s my foundation. That’s where I come from. That’s where I developed as an artist,” he said. “And most of everything, it’s three people that always supported me and always literally had my back on stage supporting me. And I always had this shield of my band, my musicians. If I fuck up, they’re gonna save me. If they fuck up, I’m gonna save them.”

Måneskin’s last full-length release was 2023’s ‘Rush‘. In a three-star review of the album, NME shared: “To have navigated such a whirlwind period and arrived here, not just in one piece but thriving, is an astonishing accomplishment. A world tour will soon commence, including dates at arenas across Europe, where these songs will fight hard for space next to Måneskin’s customary cover renditions – there’s a good chance that some of them might win out.”

More recently, the Eurovision winners performed at this year’s edition of Mad Cool Festival. In a review of their live performance, NME said: “Charging through the setlist like a well oiled machine – and doing so with their distinct brand of authenticity – Måneskin are at the very top of their game; it’s no wonder they make headline slots seem like a walk in the park.”
