Madonna Praises Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Vogue’ Cover

The magazine photoshoot was done by regular Madonna collaborator Steven Meisel and pays homage to her Blonde Ambition era

Sabrina Carpenter‘s new Vogue cover has earned a very important seal of approval. After many fans noted how Carpenter’s nostalgic shoot bore a striking resemblance to Madonna’s 1991 Vanity Fair spread, the Queen of Pop herself acknowledged the likeness.

“Is this a Valentine’s present to me?” Madonna commented on Vogue‘s post sharing the cover yesterday, nodding to Carpenter invoking her on the cover.

The Vogue image was shot by longtime Madonna collaborator Steven Meisel and sees the pop singer posing in a blue satin mini dress with a cone bra shape created by Dolce & Gabbana. It looks very similar to Madonna’s signature Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra from her 1990 Blond Ambition Tour.

Carpenter has previously paid homage to Madonna. For the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, donned a white sequin Bob Mackie gown that was famously worn by Madonna at the 1991 Oscars. During her performance at the awards, Carpenter also recreated Madonna’s kiss with Britney Spears from 2003 with an alien. (Spears responded to the performance saying, “Why is she kissing an alien on stage? I adore her. I love her to death. I didn’t understand that part. Why didn’t she kiss a girl?”)

In the Vogue cover story, Carpenter spoke about her recent success and her Short n’ Sweet tour, which heads to Europe and the U.K. next months. She explained that her stage persona is not far off from her actual self. “Short n’ Sweet is absolutely me,” Carpenter told Vogue. “There’s no, like, alter ego. But it’s definitely a more emphasized version of me. It’s interesting because I’m able to dress in this way where you would kind of expect to hear like a voice from the ’60s. But then, when I’m speaking to the audience, I’m just myself.”

She added of her recent album, “I remember feeling inspired by images of women that felt very strong and hyperfeminine. And then being like: ‘If only she said what she was actually thinking.’”
