Lzzy Hale once broke up with a guy for falling asleep during a Tool gig

Halestorm frontwoman Lzzy Hale has revealed she once broke up with someone after he fell asleep during a Tool gig.

The singer and guitarist has given an interview to Guitar Player in which she names the 10 albums that have changed her life. Among her picks was Tool’s 2001 alt-metal classic ‘Lateralus’, which prompted her to recall the incident in question.

Remembering that her little brother Arejay, who now plays drums in Halestorm, was eager to see the band around the album’s release, she said: “I had a shitty waitress job, and I got us tickets to see Tool at Hershey Park. I was so stoked.”

“Then Arejay did something to piss off our parents, so they wouldn’t allow him to go. I thought, ‘Okay, this could be an opportunity to ask somebody out on a date,’ which I did. I asked this guy Nate, and he said, ‘Yes.’ I was like, ‘Sweet!’ We didn’t have great seats, but it didn’t matter – the show was amazing. I was singing every word.”

However, the moment proved too good to be true. “Halfway through, I looked at my date and saw that he had fallen asleep – total deal-breaker for me!” she quipped. “So in a weird way, Tool’s ‘Lateralus’ was a life-changer. My brother still teases me about it: ‘I wouldn’t have fallen asleep.’”

Last summer, Hale wrapped up a stint fronting Skid Row, after the departure of previous singer Erik Grönwall due to health concerns.

After the last of four shows in Sacramento, California, she reflected on the “wonderful” experience, while Jon Bon Jovi publicly urged her to join the band permanently. “Put the two bands together, if you need to,” he said, referring also to Halestorm.

The latter band have also been announced as playing this year’s Boardwalk Rock Festival, which is taking place in Ocean City, Maryland on May 17 and 18.

Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, Nickelback and Shinedown will be topping the bill at the event, for which you can find any remaining tickets here.

Tool, meanwhile, have announced their own destination festival Tool In The Sand, which has been labelled as an “all-inclusive” experience to take place in the Dominican Republic in March.

The band will perform two sets at the festival, which will also include performances from Mastodon, Primus, Coheed And Cambria, Eagles Of Death Metal, CKY, King’s X and more. Alex Grey and Allyson Grey have been named as special guests. Find any remaining tickets here.

Maynard James Keenan has also finally named his favourite actual tool: the battery-operated pneumatic nail gun.
