Lola Young Earns First Billboard Airplay Chart No. 1 With ‘Messy’

Lola Young scores her first No. 1 on a Billboard airplay chart, as “Messy” lifts a spot to the top of the Rock & Alternative Airplay tally dated March 22.

The song rules the all-rock-format, audience-based ranking with 4.7 million audience impressions earned March 7-13, up 5% week-over-week, according to Luminate.

Its reign is buoyed by success on the spins-based Alternative Airplay and Adult Alternative Airplay charts. “Messy” rises 4-3 on the former and 6-5 on the latter, marking a new best on each ranking.

The English singer-songwriter becomes the first act to notch a first No. 1 on Rock & Alternative Airplay in 2025. The last act to do so, Myles Smith (also from England), first led with “Stargazing” in December 2024. Both Smith and Young have dominated in their first appearances on the chart.

A multi-format hit, “Messy” concurrently rises 10-9 on Adult Pop Airplay and bullets at its No. 10 best on Pop Airplay.

On the most recently published, multimetric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart (dated March 15, reflecting data Feb. 28-March 6), “Messy” remained at its No. 2 best. In addition to its radio airplay, it drew 11.6 million official U.S. streams and sold 3,000 downloads in that span.

“Messy” is on This Wasn’t Meant for You Anyway, Young’s sophomore studio set. Released in June 2024, it has so far reached No. 6 on Top Alternative Albums (Feb. 8) and earned 191,000 equivalent album units.
