Lizzo announces new album ‘Bitch’ with commanding title track: “Reclaiming the word is power”

Lizzo has announced the title and release date of her new album, ‘Bitch’, as well as the single release of the title track and video.

The Grammy and Emmy award-winning artist’s third studio album will be released on June 5, click here to pre-order. Before that, the album’s title track will be unveiled Friday May 1 at 12am ET (5am BST) along with a new video.

The song interpolates Meredith Brooks’ 1997 hit of the same name. The album’s title also calls back to one of Lizzo’s breakthrough tracks, 2019’s ‘Truth Hurts’, where she famously proclaimed: “I’m 100 per cent that bitch”.

Speaking about the inspiration for the album, the artist revealed in a press release: “Reclaiming the word ‘Bitch’ is power – it’s taking a label once used to diminish women and turning it into a declaration of confidence, and unapologetic self-love.”

“So many incredible women in music have used the word for positivity like Meredith Brooks and Missy Elliot. It was only fitting to name my album ‘Bitch’ because it has become my favourite word when using it on my own terms and because I am 100 per cent that bitch!”

The album will be the first since her 2022 release ‘Special’. NME’s four-star review said: “Perhaps inevitably, given Lizzo’s overwhelmingly positive message, ‘Special’ is sometimes a bit cheesy. Still, it’s cheesy in a way you won’t want to resist.” Critic Nick Levine then concluded: “Lizzo knows exactly who she is as an artist and what she wants to achieve: she’s the bad bitch with an incredible talent for making people feel good.”

Earlier this month, the ‘Good As Hell’ singer revealed she vowed to remain a virgin until winning a Grammy, and then lost her virginity in 2020 when she won three. She also shared that she did not have her “first kiss” until she was 21.
