Lizzo and SZA almost started a rock band called Pussy Lasers

Lizzo has revealed that she and SZA almost formed a rock band called Pussy Lasers, alongside another, unnamed artist.

The ‘Good As Hell’ singer shared the story during a Twitch stream on Friday (February 14), where she was recalling recording SZA’s song ‘F2F’ from her 2022 album ‘SOS‘.

“We just always been friends, and it’s a sacred space for me in this industry. We [had] this little period of time where we were just linking up in the studio,” Lizzo said on the stream. “One particular night, mind you, we was gonna start a rock band, called Pussy Lasers. Oh my gosh, she not gonna get mad if I say this.”

She continued: “We were going to start a rock band called Pussy Lasers with an incredible other artist who I don’t know if she even wants to be mentioned, so I’m not going to mention her,”

Lizzo then went on to say that, though ‘F2F’ wasn’t necessarily going to become a Pussy Lasers song, they knew it “could be” due to its edgier, rock-influenced sound.

“I was like, this shit is hard, though… I was like, ‘Man, pull that Pussy Lasers shit up,’ and let me tell you something: I sat and watched this girl freestyle the whole fucking song,” Lizzo said. “She ate that shit… At the end of it… I was like, ‘That’s the song.’”

She also revealed that she had recorded a “mumble verse” for the song. Though it didn’t make it to the final cut, it turns out some of her vocals can still be heard on the album. “I harmonized with her and that’s me. That’s big me,” she said. “I thought about that song all the time.”

Elsewhere in the stream, Lizzo praised SZA for her skills as a songwriter, saying she: “Writes the craziest, most insane shit that you’re thinking and feeling, but she just finds a way to say it, and she sees it so beautifully out the gate, out her mouth.”

In other news, Lizzo is currently teasing her upcoming new era, telling fans she is “truly coming to gag throats” with new music.

This came one day after she appeared to draw a firm line under her previous era, which revolved around her fourth studio album ‘Special’. “It’s the end of a very Special era,” she wrote on Instagram on Thursday (February 13). “This album was my strut back into society after a hard 2020 & 2021. I wanted to help people turn up the music, turn down the lights and get a feeling they’ll be alright.”

As for SZA, she’s heading on tour with Kendrick Lamar later this year. The pair recently performed at the massive Super Bowl Halftime show. It follows the release of ‘SOS Deluxe: Lana’, – a deluxe version of her 2022 LP ‘SOS’, which arrived in December after almost a year of speculation about its release.

In a four-star review of the album, NME wrote: For the most part, the confessional singer-songwriter isn’t simply opportunistically officialising leaked tracks and emptying the vaults of outtakes before embarking on her next phase. The ‘Lana’ songs reveal a more obvious emotional and narrative arc. Personal growth is at the fore. The record is the product of a music industry in which even formats are in flux. And SZA, too, is experiencing transformation.
