Listen to Nilüfer Yanya’s synth-led new single ‘Cold Heart’

Nilüfer Yanya has shared a new standalone single called ‘Cold Heart’. Check it out below.

The new single arrives today (April 28), and marks the singer’s first new material since sharing her third album ‘My Method Actor’ last September.

Although arriving as a standalone release, the song was developed alongside a collection of tracks that Yanya re-approached after returning from a run of live shows, and saw her work with creative partner Wilma Archer again.

The track opens with a catchy synth-driven melody, and sees the vocalist introduce her signature vocals over the top – creating an ethereal, haunting feel throughout. Speaking of the new release, Yanya said: “This one turned out pretty different to how I imagined it. The initial melody felt very spacious, like there’s room for anything to happen. It felt like a kind of experiment.”

According to a new press release, more announcements are set to come from the London singer-songwriter soon, and she is likely to break out the new single at the huge number of festival appearances lined up this summer.

These include slots at Glastonbury, All Together Now, Primavera A La Ciutat, Green Man and All Points East. Other scheduled performances include shows in Germany, Finland, Belgium, Romania, Poland, Sweden, Portugal and more, and kick off next month. Last year, Yanya’s third album was given a glowing four-star review from NME, and described as “her most absorbing listen yet”.

“Third album, ‘My Method Actor’, once again distils the London singer-songwriter’s creativity: building blocks of percolating beats, wiry guitar licks, lashings of grunge and lush soaring vocal melodies all accompany Yanya’s ruminative lyrics,” it read.

“It’s a record that spins the growing aches and pains of your twenties – and the realisations and decisions that come during these times – through Yanya’s musical world,” it added. “An honest, innovative collection that bolsters her reputation as a stellar songwriter, Yanya ‘undiluted’ makes for an absorbing listen.”

The record was later included on NME’s list of the Best Albums of 2024, and the single  ‘Like I Say (I Runaway)’ was chosen as one of NME’s Best Songs of the year too.

“There are so many brilliant things about this post-punk earworm that it’s impossible to list them all, but here are our favourites: the wall-of-sound guitar riff,” read the entry. “Yanya’s soulful vocals. That addictive whip-crack drum pattern. And this perfectly philosophical lyric: ‘Does it feel like all you have is put in black and white?’”
