Interpol‘s Paul Banks has released two moody Iggy Pop covers from the Sister Midnight soundtrack.
Banks composed the soundtrack for the film, which is directed by London-based Indian artist and filmmaker Karan Kandhari. It centres around Uma (Radhika Apte) a rebellious misfit in her small town who moves in Mumbai and struggles to be a housewife.
Now, two of his tracks from the Sister Midnight soundtrack have been shared, each Iggy Pop songs – ‘Gimme Danger’ from The Stooges‘ 1973 record ‘Raw Power’, and of course, ‘Sister Midnight’.
Speaking about the track on an Instagram story, Banks said it was “truly my great pleasure” to make the covers, adding: “Thanks to all the sick musicians who helped me and played on all these tracks! So proud to share these with y’all”.
Banks also told The Film Stage that Kandhari had already licensed certain songs beforehand, including the Iggy Pop songs: “There was an understanding that there would be these teardrops of vintage American rock, from Iggy to Motörhead, and that the film was going to kind of live in that realm. And I just think one of the things that characterises Karan is, like: it’s very unexpected. Like, everything he does is very unexpected, but very intentional.”

This will be Banks’ debut as a soundtrack composer; the OST will also feature songs from likes of Howling Wolf, Buddy Holly, The Band, Motörhead, T. Rex, and Blind Willie Johnson.
Meanwhile, Kandhari has previously directed music videos for cult bands like Franz Ferdinand on the video for their 2014 track ‘Stand On The Horizon’, along with The Vaccines‘ 2013 song ‘Melody Calling’.
The film has previously premiered at Cannes’ Directors Fortnight, and won the award for Best Film in the Next Wave section at Fantastic Fest. It was released in cinemas in the UK and Ireland on March 14.
Interpol are currently on their ‘Antics’ 20th anniversary tour, where they’re playing their classic 2004 album in full. Meanwhile, Paul Banks have said Interpol are “pumped” to be working on a new “rock” album.
In an interview with NME, Banks has shared that they are in fact working on “a rock record”. “I’m pretty pumped about the stuff that we have worked on so far,” the frontman said. “That’s all I can really say: it’s an enthusiastic ‘yes’. It’s pretty cool.
“With this [next] record, we’re getting back to writing together in a room and my favourite tracks so far are quite high energy.”
