Lil Yachty Flips a Maggie Rogers Classic on New Song ‘Murda’

The rapper’s first solo single if 2025 is based around a sample of Rogers’ breakthrough song “Alaska”

Lil Yachty is back with his first new song of 2025, “Murda,” which features a prominent sample of Maggie Rogers’ breakthrough 2016 song, “Alaska.”

The two-minute track is built around a loop of Rogers’ vocal hook from “Alaska,” which gets chopped up and utilized in a few different ways, sometimes drifting breezily through the atmospheric production, sometimes whirring wildly like a siren. Meanwhile, Yachty’s lyrics veer from the casually sinister — “We left that boy in a ditch/Audemars watch on my wrist” — to more contemplative and funny: “Pull up, what’s that smell?/I’m the shit with a house on the hill.”

“Murda” also arrives with a music video directed by frequent collaborator, AMD Visuals, and premiering via Lyrical Lemonade. The clip utilizes an array of surreal, abstract images, like a torrent of cash bursting through an open window and Yachty firing two guns at a shooting range while someone covers his eyes from behind.

While “Murda” is Yachty’s first solo song of the year, he’s done a few collaborations already, including “Can’t Be Crete Boy” with Veeze and “Sista Wives” with 2 Chainz. He also provided production on Lil Durk’s track “Untouchable,” which appeared on the Chicago rapper’s latest album, Deep Thoughts.

Yachty’s last solo album, Let’s Start Here, arrived in January 2023. Throughout 2024, he kept busy with a string of loose singles, while also sharing the EP Something Ether, as well as a collaborative album with James Blake, Bad Cameo

Lately, Lil Yachty’s been providing support for Tyler, the Creator on his Chromakopia tour. The trek just wrapped a European run, while the North American leg is set to kick off June 27 in Cincinnati and run through July 25 in Toronto.
