Lady Gaga‘s seventh studio album, which has been referred to as LG7 for the past few years, finally has an official title: Mayhem, set for release on March 7.
The album announcement follows a days-long countdown hosted on the musician’s official website. For more than a week, fans have been watching the seconds, minutes, and hours tick away as they anxiously anticipated new details about the long-awaited album.
On Jan. 27, fans spotted a billboard in Times Square that pictured Gaga with a choppy black haircut, her face slightly distorted behind shattered glass. The ad featured the album title and release date in a bold red font.
When the countdown ended, Gaga’s website included pre-order links to her 15 track LP along with new merch drops for the album. In a release, it was revealed that the album’s third single will arrive on Feb. 2, with the music video airing during a Grammy Awards commercial break.
“The album started as me facing my fear of returning to the pop music my earliest fans loved,” said Gaga in a statement. She further described the creative process as “reassembling a shattered mirror: even if you can’t put the pieces back together perfectly, you can create something beautiful and whole in its own new way.”
Mayhem will mark Gaga’s first full-length LP since 2020’s Chromatica. She first previewed Mayhem in October 2024 with the lead single “Disease.” In an interview with Rolling Stone, she described the connection between the song and album, saying: “It felt like a way into the chaos of the album, which is kind of exercises in chaos — different sides of who I am as a person. To me, there’s some kind of chaos in all of the ways we try to analyze ourselves. ‘Disease’ is the beginning of that.”
The album was initially expected to arrive in February. In fact, for months, that was one of the few details Gaga shared about the project. But it must have been an estimation, only off by a few weeks. From what we know about the album, it will likely be worth the wait. Gaga has explained that Mayhem will be “nothing like” the disco and electro-pop records on Chromatica. Instead, it will revisit the dark-pop releases she shared earlier in her career.
“The album is chaotic from a genre perspective — it is genre-bending, and I think in that way is a deeply personal look into my mind as a producer and the way I think about music,” Gaga told Vogue in November. “When I write and produce and sing songs, I am always drawing upon my knowledge of the history of music, and so many artists and producers that came before me. In that way, this album is a celebration of a lot of the music that made me who I am, because when I returned to a darker pop style of pop, all my early experiences with music came out.”
