Lewis Capaldi Is Ready to Release New EP After ‘Crying Quite a Lot’ in Therapy for Two Years

On Good Morning America, the musician revealed his album release timeline and detailed his experience returning to the spotlight after an extended hiatus to focus on his mental and physical health

Lewis Capaldi is feeling a little rusty as he eases into his first proper promotional cycle in two years. The musician appeared on Good Morning America to perform his comeback single “Survive,” which follows an extended hiatus he began in 2023 to focus on his mental and physical health. Capaldi first premiered the record live at Glastonbury Festival.

“I haven’t done this in two years, been on TV, so I’m a bit rusty, but it was good fun,” Capaldi said on GMA. “It was nerve wracking. I did lots of nervous pees. We got it all out, and I feel elated. I’m really happy to be back and doing what I love to do and what they pay me to do.” Capaldi also performed his 2019 hit “Someone You Loved” on the morning show.

The singer-songwriter joked that while “Survive” has already reached the top of the singles chart in the U.K, it’s “doing nothing” in the U.S. If this song doesn’t take, he has plans to release a few more in the coming months. “I don’t know about an album, but I’m doing an EP at some point this year, and then album maybe will follow next year,” Capaldi said. His next single will arrive “later this summer, and then another song after that, and another song after that, until the day I die.”

“Survive” addressed Capaldi’s mental health struggles in the wake of his battle with Tourette’s syndrome. Following his 2023 Glastonbury performance, the singer announced that he would be taking a break from performing live “for the foreseeable future,” explaining that he had difficulty performing due to tics.

During his break, Capaldi spent his time doing “lots of therapy,” he said. “It’s been nice talking a little bit myself, crying quite a lot the last two years. It’s been good fun, and I’ve just been really locking in and putting it all together.”
