Laura Jane Grace Returns From Greece With Stories to Tell on Upcoming Album ‘Adventure Club’

Laura Jane Grace spent one month in Greece on an artist retreat writing songs and indulging in the endless potential of greek storytelling. She crafted 12 songs that have taken shape as her forthcoming studio album Adventure Club, out July 18. The collection of songs were inspired by classic tropes in Greek mythology, including the greed and betrayal of Grace’s latest single “Mine Me Mine.”

“They found a way, they found a way/To make more money than they’ll ever need/And know that they have found a way/They’re gonna charge you double for everything,” she sings on the record. “We serve ourselves, we serve ourselves/We see our god in nothing else/A righteous war, a bitter end/The eternal is limited.”

Grace completed Adventure Club with her wife and collaborator Paris Campbell Grace, who cut vocals for the album, and two Athens-based musicians, bassist Jacopo “Jack” Fokas and drummer Orestis Lagadinos. In its final form, it’s billed as Laura Jane Grace in the Trauma Tropes, an exploration of love, war, trust, betrayal, virtue & vice, and more inspired by her adventures in Greece.

Adventure Club is frequently a record about learning to take up space, about feeling free to be yourself as the bullshit of our ahistoric moment mounts,” a release about the album reads. “Protest songs and personal tunes have never been a binary for Grace, and she delivers some of her most profound — and, yes, playful — work ever at that particular intersection here. But the most prominent thread through Adventure Club’s dozen tracks is one of evolution, of letting yourself become something new.”
