Lana Del Rey says ‘Lasso’ isn’t going to be a “heavy departure” from her Americana roots

Lana Del Rey has opened up about her upcoming country album ‘Lasso’, and how different it will be from her previous material – see what she had to say below.

Earlier this year, Lana Del Rey announced her 10th studio album, ‘Lasso’, which she confirmed will see her venture into country, and is being made alongside both regular collaborator, producer and Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff and country music maker Luke Laird.

Little has been revealed about the album, which has yet to receive a release date. However, the singer-songwriter has now revealed several details about the sonics of the upcoming record. In a new interview with Vogue, Del Rey said of ‘Lasso’: “All my albums are somewhat rooted in Americana, unless it’s an album like ‘Honeymoon’ which has a jazz flair, so I don’t think it will be a heavy departure.”

She continued, explaining: “If anything, it will just be a little lighter lyrically, and more pointed in a classic country, American, or Southern Gothic production — which again, so many of my songs already are.”

As for teasers of the album, Lana Del Rey most recently teamed up with rapper Quavo to release ‘Tough’ in early July. It is currently unclear if ‘Tough’ will feature on Lana’s ‘Lasso’, or if it will part of a larger Quavo project. But that isn’t the only taste of what’s to come on ‘Lasso’.

Lana revealed to Vogue that she has more singles planned for release soon: “We have two more coming out by the end of the year!”

The update on ‘Lasso’ comes ahead of Lana’s headlining performances at Reading & Leeds festival this weekend – she’s due to perform at Reading on Saturday August 24 and at Leeds on Sunday August 25.

Prior to those performances, Del Rey kicked off her summer 2024 European festival tour, performing at Rock en Seine in France on August 21. You can check out footage of the show and her entire setlist here.

Earlier this year, Lana Del Rey announced a new country album, ‘Lasso’. While the album has yet to receive a release date, the singer spoke to NME‘s Andrew Trendell in May. Though she didn’t reveal much about the album, Lana suggested that the album’s lyrics might be lighter than her more recent output.

“I’ve maybe less to say in terms of any self-revealing things like on ‘Tunnel’ or ‘Blue Bannisters’ or ‘Chemtrails Over The Country Club’, and just more melodic. Maybe more American Songbook style?”

She also opened up about a potential sense of vindication around the new project. “Maybe three years ago there would have been a sense of vindication, but now it just feels playful. I don’t know why,” she explained, looking at her recent successes. “If you hang in long enough, it just feels easy. There’s no vindication, no nothing – I’m just kind of happy to be here.  It’s easy-going in that way.”

During the chat, she also spoke about her “wild” plans for Reading & Leeds. When asked by NME if she plans to bring her country influences to the sets, and if she plans on riding horses to the stage, she replied: “Ooh, do you wanna know something? I actually thought about that! I fucking did!”
