The nominations for the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards are here, with Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, and Sabrina Carpenter among this year’s most-nominated artists.
Gaga led all contenders with an impressive 12 nominations, thanks largely to her collaboration with Bruno Mars, “Die With a Smile,” which is up for Video and Song of the Year, as well as Best Collaboration. Gaga is also nominated for Artist of the Year, while her latest LP, Mayhem, is up for Album of the Year. Meanwhile, the eye-popping visual for Gaga’s Mayhem single “Abracadabra” racked up a slew of creative and technical award nominations, including Best Directing, Cinematography, and Choreography.
Meanwhile, Lamar notched 10 nominations, most of them for his smash, Grammy-winning Drake diss “Not Like Us,” though he’s also up for Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration for “Luther,” featuring SZA. And Carpenter, who won her first VMA last year for “Espresso,” earned eight nominations, including Video of the Year for her recent single “Manchild.”
In Video of the Year, Gaga and Mars’ “Die With a Smile,” Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” and Carpenter’s “Manchild” will compete against Ariana Grande’s “Brighter Days Ahead,” Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather,” Rosé and Mars’ “APT,” and the Weeknd and Playboi Carti’s “Timeless.” Artist of the Year boasts Gaga, Lamar, Bad Bunny, Beyoncé, Morgan Wallen, Taylor Swift, and the Weeknd.
And the opening slate of nominees for Song of the Year includes Gaga and Mars’ “Die With a Smile,” Rosé and Mars’ “APT,” the Weeknd and Carti’s “Timeless,” Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather,” Alex Warren’s “Ordinary,” Doechii’s “Anxiety,” Ed Sheeran’s “Sapphire,” Gracie Abrams’ “I Love You, I’m Sorry,” Lorde’s “What Was That,” and Tate McRae’s “Sports Car.” This crop of songs will be narrowed down to six nominees by Aug. 18, with voting continuing through Sept. 5.
Editor’s picks
Fan voting for all 19 gender-neutral VMA categories is open now and will end on Sept. 5. Only voting for Best New Artist will continue into the show itself, which is set to air live, Sept. 7, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, MTV, and Paramount+.
Other highlights from this year’s VMAs are first nominations for a slew of artists, including Rosé, Warren, Lola Young, the Marias, Gigi Perez, and Damiano David. Mac Miller earned his first VMA nomination posthumously, with his “Baloonerism” visual up for Best Long Form Video. The 2025 VMAs will also see the introduction of two new categories, Best Country and Best Pop Artist.
