Lady Gaga describes new album ‘Mayhem’ as “utter chaos”

Lady Gaga has described her upcoming album ‘Mayhem’, due out on March 7, as “utter chaos” in a new interview.

Speaking to Elle magazine ahead of the record’s release, the singer described it as “utter chaos” in terms of genre – saying that its influences span from “’90s alternative, electro-grunge, Prince and Bowie melodies, guitar and attitude, funky bass lines, French electronic dance, and analog synths.”

“[The album] just feels good to me. It sounds good. It breaks a lot of rules and has a lot of fun,” she told the outlet.

Speaking about being able to see music as colours, which is known as synesthesia, she said: “As I’m writing, it assembles in my brain, then through the recording it becomes a full piece of color. Every song is a different shade. A lot of the songs on this album have a maroon, brown color to them. ‘Bad Romance’ was like that—it was reddish.”

Gaga also said that she previously thought it was her stage persona and character who made the music. However, in the process of making ‘Mayhem’ she released that it came from within; “I’m the creator and I made all of it, and that helped me to value myself as a musician and a songwriter in a deeper way.”

‘Mayhem’ will be Gaga’s seventh studio album, and is available for pre-order here. Comprised of 14 tracks executively produced by Gaga, Michael Polansky and Andrew Watt and featuring producers such as Cirkut and Gesaffelstein, ‘Mayhem’ has been promised to reinvent Gaga’s “early sound with a kaleidoscopic approach”, as per a press release.

Polansky, Gaga’s fiance, also spoke to Elle about the upcoming project. “This album was so much fun to watch her make … what surprised me most was how fast she is. I couldn’t believe how quickly a song would take shape. Within five minutes, 80 per cent of the song would have come from nothing.”

Gaga is set to debut the third single of ‘Mayhem’ and its accompanying music video on February 2 during a commercial break at the 2025 Grammy Awards.

In other news, Gaga was confirmed as a headliner for Coachella 2025, alongside Post Malone and Green Day.  She will also be one of the performers at the LA Wildfires benefit concert, alongside the likes of Billie Eilish, Stevie Nicks, Green Day and more.
