The Collection: Kirk Hammett will feature extensive interviews with the Metallica guitarist about the instruments that have shaped his life and career
Metallica’s Kirk Hammett will share some of the stories behind the instruments he’s used throughout his career in a new coffee table book, The Collection: Kirk Hammett.
The 400-page book (available to order now via Gibson Publishing) delves into Hammett’s life and music via his massive collection of guitars. The tome features new interviews with Hammett about the instruments he’s used over the years, including his 1979 Flying V and “Greeny,” the 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard previously owned by Fleetwood Mac’s Peter Green and Thin Lizzy’s Gary Moore.
The interviews with Hammett were conducted by Chris Vinnicombe and Mark Agnesi. The book will also feature new photographs shot on location in Hawaii and Los Angeles by storied rock photographer Ross Halfin, as well as some rare images from Halfin’s archives.
In a statement, Hammett said of the book, “I’ve worked diligently on this curated collection of vintage and modern guitars for the book. I feel the book captures the rich history and artistry behind each of these unique and rare instruments. Every picture tells a story and thanks to Ross Halfin and his exceptional photography, every picture in this book is worth a million words!”
Accompanying the book reveal is a new teaser featuring narration from Jason Momoa. “Every guitar has a story, and the thrill of finding the right one can be as electrifying as any song it will play,” Momoa says in the clip. “Collecting is an obsession, a passion, and a neverending quest for discovering the perfect tone. No one knows this more than Kirk Hammett.”
