Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Since U Been Gone’ joins Spotify’s Billions Club

Kelly Clarkson has joined Spotify’s Billions Club.

The singer reached the milestone with her 2004 hit ‘Since U Been Gone’, which is also her first track to surpass one billion streams on the platform.

Written and produced by Max Martin and Dr. Luke, ‘Since U Been Gone’ was released as the second single from Clarkson’s 2004 album, ‘Breakaway’.

It’s one of Clarkson’s most famous songs, reaching Number Two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2005 and winning a Grammy Award the following year for best female pop vocal performance.

Its music video also earned two MTV Video Music Awards in 2005 for best female video and best pop video.

Speaking about the song in a recent interview with Apple Music, Clarkson said: “I love what the song does for people, I love that it was very different in demo form sent to me. Behind the scenes, it was not so fun to record because of situations I won’t talk about, because I won’t sell people out.”

She added: “But I will say, my favourite memory, if I’m being more positive about it, was the fact that I got to show up to a video shoot and completely trash an apartment, and that was my job. That video was possibly one of my favourite videos ever to make, because literally I just got to just have rage, and just break stuff all day long.”

Other recent additions to the Billions Club include Alicia Keys’ ‘No One’, Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’, Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ and Rage Against The Machine’s ‘Killing In The Name’.

Back in April, Metallica’s ‘Master Of Puppets’ reached the one billion milestone, and the band urged fans to “send it on its way to two billion”.

In other news, earlier this year, Clarkson celebrated the 1,000th episode of her US chat show by sharing that she had “lost a lot” since the show began.

The Kelly Clarkson Show is well known for its ‘Kellyoke’ segment, in which the host performs esoteric cover versions of beloved pop and alternative classics, including in recent times Billie Eilish’s ‘Birds Of A Feather’, as well as tracks by Weezer, Chappell Roan, The Last Dinner Party, and My Chemical Romance, among others. It also birthed a covers EP by Clarkson in 2022.
