Keanu Reeves to star as villain in upcoming Weezer film

Keanu Reeves is reportedly in line to play the bad guy in the upcoming Weezer film.

According to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, the John Wick star will feature prominently in the mockumentary-style movie that will revolve around a rivalry between Weezer and Reeves’ own band Dogstar.

The report suggests the film will be a cross between Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and will also star Juliette Lewis, Eric Andre, Johnny Knoxville and Ben Schwartz, as well as the members of the band themselves. Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, known for films in the Paranormal Activity franchise, will direct the film.

Weezer’s first ever show was as the opening band for Dogstar at Raji’s in Los Angeles in 1992 – indeed, the two bands returned to the city’s Lodge Room in March last year to play together – and the film will likely draw on the real-life history between the two ‘90s alt-rock groups.

Dogstar were a regular presence during the ‘90s, releasing a number of grunge-influenced albums. They went on hiatus, only to re-emerge in 2023 with the comeback album ‘Somewhere Between The Power Lines And Palm Trees’.

During their appearance at Coachella weekend one, Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo revealed that they had been working on a movie, although he remained tight-lipped about what the premise of it would be.

In other Weezer news, Jillian Shriner, the wife of bassist Scott, was taken into custody in Los Angeles earlier this month after sustaining a non-life-threatening gunshot wound from a police officer.

In a complex scenario involving an unrelated hit-and-run car chase, Shriner is said to have fired her handgun at one of the suspects and then pointed it at officers, refusing to lower it. She was “booked for attempted murder”, and later posted bail for $1million.

Meanwhile, Weezer will embark on a UK and Europe tour later this year. You can get tickets here (UK/Ireland) and here (Europe).

As for Reeves, Soft Play made a bold plea to the actor to join them at their Coachella weekend two show for a rendition of their song ‘John Wick’, saying it would be “a dream come true” if he played bass with them at the show.
