Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom Break Up: A Complete Timeline of Their Relationship

Nine years after they first met and got together, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have ended their relationship. On Thursday, People confirmed the news of their split, officially ending their six-year engagement.

The news broke after days of speculation, following reports that Bloom was set to attend Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s wedding without Perry, who is on her Lifetimes tour in Australia. The two are parents to daughter, Daisy Dove, who was born in August 2020. Neither star has commented publicly about their split.

From the first meeting over burgers and a rocky romantic start to an engagement and their eventual split, here’s a complete timeline of Perry and Bloom’s romance:

January 2016 — Perry and Bloom meet

Perry recounted the story of meeting Bloom while she was a judge on American Idol, saying she first crossed paths with the actor at an afterparty following the 2016 Golden Globe Awards.

“I met my boyfriend over In-N-Out. We were at the Golden Globes and we weren’t together,” she said. “So I had my security guard grab 10 In-N-Outs, and all of a sudden I see my boyfriend’s hand — he wasn’t even sitting at our table — he just swoops in and he grabs it and I was like, ‘Hey that’s my burger!’”

Things moved quickly for the pop star-actor pair. According to People, Bloom introduced Perry to her son Flynn, whom he shares with ex Miranda Kerr, about a month after meeting. The couple went IG official in May 2016 with a photo together in France. “We cannes’t,” she captioned the post of the pair lying on the stairs of a Cannes hotel.

August 2016 — That paddleboard photo goes viral

Several months into their relationship, paparazzi caught Bloom and Perry paddleboarding while on vacation. Innocent enough, right? Not exactly. In the photos, Perry was seen wearing a bikini, while Bloom had… well, nothing on. Naturally, the photo quickly went viral.

“It was extremely surprising,” he later told ELLE UK in 2017. “I wouldn’t have put myself in that position if I’d thought it would happen. I’ve been photographed a million times in a million ways. I have a good radar.”

February 2017 — The couple briefly splits, but remain friends

In early 2017, Perry and Bloom broke up after about a year of dating. Speculation of their split swirled after they attended the Vanity Fair afterparty for the Oscars separately.

Their reps even issued a statement at the time: “Before rumors or falsifications get out of hand, we can confirm that Orlando and Katy are taking respectful, loving space at this time.”

The following month, Perry wrote on Twitter: “HOW BOUT A NEW WAY OF THINKING FOR 2017⁉️U can still b friends & love ur former partners! No one’s a victim or a villain, get a life y’all!”

Later, in April of that year, Bloom assured Elle that he and Perry “are friends.” He said at the time: “It’s good. We’re all grown up. She happens to be someone who is very visible, but I don’t think anybody cares about what I’m up to. Nor should they. It’s between us. It’s better to set an example for kids and show that [breakups] don’t have to be about hate.”

While speaking to the Call Her Daddy podcast in September 2024, Perry shared that part of what led to their first split was that “we weren’t, like, really in it from day one.”

“I mean, he was in a way, because he had just done a huge time of celibacy, and he had set intentions,” she told the host. “I was fresh out of a relationship, and I was just like, ‘I can’t do this anymore. I need to go swim in a different pond,’ but I had yet to do a lot of real work.”

It took the pair of them going to the Hoffman Institute on their own to really figure themselves out, with Perry explaining that Bloom was “playing this cat-and-mouse game,” before they reunited.

September 2018 — Guess who’s back?

Months after being spotted on a date in Prague in February 2018 (when a source told People “they are dating but not necessarily putting a label on it”), Perry and Bloom made things official. In September of that year, the couple made their red carpet debut at the Gala for the Global Ocean in Monaco. After the official date, the pair went on a mini vacation to Greece.

Things kept going strong through late 2018. During the One Love Malibu Festival benefit concert charity auction, which aimed to help Malibu recover from wildfires, one of the prizes was a date with Bloom. So, naturally, Perry offered the highest bid: $50,000.

“You can do a motorcycle ride with him to a lunch destination to have lunch with Orlando freaking Bloom,” she joked onstage as she helped auction him off. “That also means that when you are on the motorcycle with him you’re holding him in a way that I am not excited about.”

Valentine’s Day 2019 — Bloom pops the question

What better than a Valentine’s Day proposal? Bloom got on one knee during the romantic holiday in 2019 to ask Perry to marry him. (He even asked Perry’s parents for permission!)

“It was very sweet,” Perry later told Jimmy Kimmel on his late-night show. “It was Valentine’s Day … we went to dinner and I thought we were going to go see some art after dinner but we pulled up to a helicopter… “We landed on a rooftop [in Los Angeles] — my whole family was there, and all my friends. He did so well.”

Sources told People the following month that Perry and Bloom had moved in together and that “everyone is getting along great,” referring to Bloom’s ex Miranda Kerr and their child Flynn.

August 27, 2020 — Perry and Bloom welcome Daisy Dove

The year 2020 was a complicated one for everyone, but it did have a big blessing in store for Perry and Bloom. In March of that year, Perry announced she was having a baby, calling it “probably the longest secret I’ve ever had to keep” on an Instagram Live.

Perry and Bloom were supposed to get married at some point that summer, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they were forced to postpone the ceremony.

On Aug. 27, the stars welcomed their baby girl, sharing the announcement via UNICEF, where they are both ambassadors. “We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter,” they wrote, encouraging folks to donate to the charity to help expecting mothers with “access to quality healthcare.”

2022 — Wedding plans?

Perry was in the middle of her historic Play residency in Las Vegas for all of 2022, and spoke a few times throughout the year about the future of her family.

In January of that year, she told People about Daisy Dove’s personality and she’s “a combination of both me and her father, which we are fearless with lots of chutzpah and just big characters. So the combination of us both is definitely coming out,” Perry said. “It’s amazing to see everything new again through a toddler’s eyes.”

She also teased that she had a “destination location” in mind for her wedding with Bloom, but that things were up in the air because of the pandemic.

January 2023 — Perry and Bloom’s ex, Miranda Kerr, pose for photos together

In an iconic display of mixed-family love, Perry and Bloom’s ex Miranda Kerr walked the red carpet at the G’Day USA Arts Gala — and Perry even introduced Kerr before she was given an award at the ceremony.

“Some of you might be confused about why I’m introducing Miranda, that doesn’t play into the antiquated narrative of ex-wives and new wives,” Perry said onstage, per People. “And yes, it’s true, most of the media would like to see us mud wrestle, including [her husband] Evan [Spiegel], but we are here to lead by love because Miranda is love.”

“I’m so grateful for our modern blended family. It’s like I gained another sister, one with whom I usually sidebar from the main family chat and agree with,” she added.

April 2024 — Bloom talks about how he “fell in love” with Perry

During an appearance on the What Now? with Trevor Noah podcast, Bloom spoke about his relationship and love story with Perry.

“I think one of the things that I fell in love with Katy was… she hates when I say this, so I have to word it carefully, but her music was everywhere, right?” she said. “When I came up, it was just on every radio station, but I wasn’t conscious of… [it] wasn’t what I was listening to, but, I fell in love with Katheryn, this girl from Santa Barbara. And by the way, parents, pastors, living on food stamps.”

Bloom told Noah that the pair had an “understanding where we came from” and the work that they do, and that Perry “definitely demands that I evolve.”

Later that year, Perry spoke about how Bloom shows up in their relationship.

“We all have our strengths and then our opportunities for growth. But one of his strengths [is] when I crumble, he can step in and be that anchor. That’s amazing,” said Perry on Call Her Daddy. “because I’m usually just alpha, alpha, you know? I’m like testosterone, testosterone. ‘I got this. I don’t need any help,’ but actually I do need help. I do need a partner.”

March 2025 — Perry says she’s “proud of my family life”

While speaking to Rolling Stone ahead of her world Lifetimes tour, Perry said she was proud of where things are in her life, sharing that she is “much more balanced” these days.

“I was proud of being able to lean on the balance that I’ve created in this time. I’m proud of my family life, my home life, and the beauty that I have and the foundation I have,” Perry said at the time. “I’m excited to see this world tour through Daisy’s eyes. It’s like seeing Christmas in a whole different light. When you have a little kid, their eyes light up about the wildest things.”
