Joe Keery has called out President Donald Trump for defending ICE after an officer fatally shot a US citizen.
On Wednesday (January 8), a 37-year-old poet and mother of three was shot dead behind the wheel of her car by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent.
The incident happened on a residential street in Minneapolis and, soon after, the president was quick to defend the actions of the ICE agent, writing on Truth Social that he had reviewed footage from the moment and concluded that the officer was acting “in self-defence”.
“The woman screaming was, obviously, a professional agitator, and the woman driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE officer, who seems to have shot her in self-defence,” he said.
He then shared an update about the ICE agent, adding: “It is hard to believe he is alive, but is now recovering in the hospital.”
Trump divided opinion with his comments about the victim – named as Renee Nicole Good – with many criticising him for being so quick to justify the shooting.
One to have spoken out is musician and Stranger Things star Joe Keery, who took to social media to hit out at the president for his lack of compassion for the woman killed. Taking to Instagram Stories, Keery shared a photo of Trump’s Truth Social post, and wrote over the top: “Zero human decency. Stop this man”.

Others to have called out Trump include Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey, who attended a press conference and said: “They’re already trying to spin this as an action of self-defence. Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly – that is bullshit.”
Frey also shared a message aimed directly at ICE, telling agents in the city to “Get the fuck out of Minneapolis.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also called out Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem – who alleged that Good attempted to run over ICE officers in “an act of domestic terrorism” – saying: “You’ve done enough. [The state] doesn’t need any further help from the federal government”.
“To Donald Trump and Kristi Noem: You’ve done enough … I’ve issued a warning order to prepare the Minnesota National Guard. We have soldiers in training and prepared to be deployed if necessary.”

As reported by The Independent, Trump has since doubled down on his Truth Social claims and told a group of reporters in the Oval Office that still thinks Good was at fault for the incident.
“I want to see nobody get shot. I want to see nobody screaming and trying to run over policemen either… That was a vicious situation that took place,” he said. “She behaved horribly, and then she ran him over,” he added of Good. “With all of it being said, no, I don’t like that happening. It’s a terrible scene. I think it’s horrible to watch. I hate to see it.”
Others who have criticised Trump for his comments include chat show host Jimmy Kimmel, who labelled the president as a “maniac” (via USA Today), and news anchor Chris Hayes, who said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that ICE’s actions would be interpreted by many as “cold-blooded murder”.
The actions of ICE were also described as “state-sponsored terrorism” by California Gov. Gavin Newsom (as per The Independent).
Others have come forward to defend ICE, including Vice President JD Vance who claimed on X/Twitter that Good was a “deranged leftist” and said that her being fatally shot was “a tragedy of her own making.”
Additionally, Noem’s deputy, Tricia McLaughlin, branded Good as “violent rioter” who had “weaponised her vehicle” on X.
Keery’s comments come following the fifth and final season of Stranger Things wrapping up on New Years Day. The last episode of the hit Netflix series – in which he plays a character called Steve Harrington – debuted to 59.6million views, which was a new record for an English-language title on Netflix.
The actor also releases music under the moniker Djo, and recently saw his viral hit ‘End Of The Beginning‘ dethrone Taylor Swift‘s ‘The Fate Of Ophelia‘ from the top of Spotify‘s global chart.
