Joe Jonas’ New Music Wasn’t a Fit for Jonas Brothers or DNCE, So He’s Officially Going Solo

Nearly two decades into his music career, Joe Jonas is going solo. The Jonas Brothers and DNCE member will release his technical debut solo single “Work It Out” on Friday, July 19, as the first preview from an album of his own. The record will arrive in full later this year following a string of singles.

“I’m both excited and emotional as I’m gearing up to release new music,” Joe shared in a statement. “I’m humbled and grateful to collaborate with some of my favorite musicians and creators. I hope you find as much happiness & peace as I do when you listen to these songs.”

During a recent appearance on the podcast Therapuss, the 34-year-old revealed that the forthcoming album started taking shape when he realized the music he was working on wasn’t a perfect fit for either of his bands. “I was like I don’t know what it’s for but I know I want to work on something I feel like the pull emotionally to work on music,” he explained. “And so I asked my brothers blessings, and I was like, ‘I don’t want to call it solo, but I want to go do something on my own, and I don’t feel like it’s DNCE and I need to go just express stuff for myself.’”

Jonas Brothers wrapped a massive world tour last year, after which each member of the trio shifted their focus to other projects. Nick is planning his return to Broadway with The Last Five Years, opening next year. Meanwhile, Kevin is preparing to launch the second season of his nepo baby reality series Claim to Fame. Both brothers were happy to give Joe the green light to go all-in on music.

The singer locked in with a crew of collaborators composed mostly of close friends. He worked with Alexander 23, Justin Trainor, Jason Evigan, Tommy English, MUNA’s Josette Maskin, Paris Carney, and more. “We made an album in 2 – 3 weeks,” Joe revealed on the podcast. “Just 2 rooms all at once and I’m just really excited. It’s the most personal music I have ever put out.”

“Work It Out,” in particular, emerged from a session with Evigan and a songwriter known as Blush. “The idea is pretty much just sometimes you realize that you just have to shake yourself out of something and you’re the only person whose going to fix it for yourself, no one is going to come save you,” Joe explained.

Across the upcoming album, he said, “There’s some real beautiful ballads, there’s songs about being a dad, there’s songs about love, there’s songs about being better to yourself, kinda everything.”
