JAŸ-Z in 8 will see the rapper digging back into his catalog while in conversation with Rick Rubin about his life, career, and music.

The first two episodes are directed by Rubin, marking his directorial debut, and will premiere on September 18. After that, two episodes will drop each Friday until October 9.

Each episode will centre around a handful of Jay-Z songs, selected by Rubin, and will see the two candidly discuss the writing process, Jay’s childhood and the experience that shaped him, and how his career has changed over time.

In a clip shared from the series, Jay discusses the popularity of rap music. “The reason why rap is so loved — that feeling of that underdog,” he says. “That’s why people were listening, that’s why it hit them somewhere.”

The married couple also recently performed together during Jay-Z’s three-night run at Yankee Stadium in New York, with Beyoncé joining him on the opening night for ‘Can’t Knock The Hustle’ and on the final night on ‘Drunk In Love’.

Jay-Z will continue his run of big shows with two nights at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on September 4 and 5. He then heads to Paris’ Stade De France on September 10, before two shows at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium on October 23 and 24. Find any remaining tickets here.

For a while now, there have been rumours that he is working on the follow-up to his last album, 2017’s ‘4:44’. Despite speculation, though, friend and collaborator Cash Cobain recently dismissed hopes and said that the rapper told him recently that he is “absolutely not dropping an album” anytime soon (via Variety).

The rapper will be releasing one new song with Eminem and Rakim, though, and it will be their first partnership in  25 years and feature on the latter’s upcoming album, due out on August 28.
