Ice Nine Kills sarcastically respond to allegations of AI use

Ice Nine Kills gave a humorous response to allegations they had used generative AI to create a promotional image.

The horror movie-themed metalcore band came under fire online after fans suspected they had used artificial intelligence to generate a picture used to promote a Memorial Day merch sale. The image in question was shared on social media on Saturday (May 24) and depicted Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, from the Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th franchises respectively, grilling meat on a barbecue.

A report by MetalInjection suggested that the image had several qualities that suggested it was AI-generated. The outlet noted that the knives the characters are holding are upside down and it is not clear what the other object in Freddy’s hand is meant to be.

Following the backlash, Ice Nine Kills gave a sarcastic statement on their social media.  “We are vigorously investigating the disturbing claims that a recent promotional image was sloppily birthed by AI,” they said on X/Twitter. “We solemnly pledge to get to the bottom of this horrific headline-making crime against Redditors. For now, enjoy our new promo photo, taken just moments ago.”

The picture accompanying the statement also appears to be AI-generated. It depicts the band in suits and sunglasses with unusually large muscles.

Last month, the band announced a UK and European tour with Creeper and The Devil Wears Prada for later this year.

Their ‘A Work Of Art Tour’ is kicking off in Milan on November 19 with dates running through to December 12, when they will conclude their run with their biggest headline UK show to date at London’s OVO Arena Wembley.

Ice Nine Kills frontman Spencer Charnas said of the tour (via Stereogum): “We’ll be playing to more psychos across Europe than ever before, so we’ve sharpened our axes and dusted off our raincoats in preparation for the bloodiest gigs yet. The tour will climax at Wembley Arena, where we hope to summon Freddie Mercury, Jason Bonham, David Bowie, Adele, and the other famous ghosts who haunt the historic London venue.”
