Hurray for the Riff Raff Saddles Up for ‘Buffalo’ Video, Rides Over to ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’

The single appears on Hurray for the Riff Raff’s latest studio album The Past Is Still Alive

Hurray for the Riff Raff released their eighth studio album The Past Is Still Alive in February. Eight months later, front person Alynda Segarra is still exploring new ground from the record with the release of an official music video for “Buffalo.” In the clip, Segarra finds themselves in the company of emotive wildlife figures in a museum and out in the fields they can be seen roaming through.

The “Buffalo” journey continued as Hurray for the Riff Raff took the stage on the Kelly Clarkson Show for a performance of the somber record. Segarra was joined for the performance by a three-piece band while leading on acoustic guitar. “This year tried to kill us, baby/Well good luck trying, you can’t catch me/And I’ll jump off this cliff with you/If that means we will survive,” they sang. “‘Cause we drove out to the desert/Just to leave the past behind.”

Earlier this year, Segarra spoke to Rolling Stone about creating The Past Is Still Alive, which marked their first album release in two years. “With past albums, I felt this pressure to be very hopeful, and to give people hope, and it started to really make me uncomfortable,” they said at the time. “I wanted to free myself of that role, and say that things are gonna have to fall apart for us to build something new.”

The Past Is Still Alive featured the lead single “Alibi,” which opens the record and leads directly into “Buffalo.” It’s another song that reflects the depths of Segarra’s thematic exploration on the album. “It’s straight-up just being like, how do I possibly convince the listener that they deserve to live?” they explained. “And also recognizing I can’t convince somebody of that. Or the only person I can actually convince is myself.”

Hurray for the Riff Raff currently has live shows scheduled through the end of the year.
