Hello, It’s Me Onscreen: Adele to Make Acting Debut in Tom Ford-Directed Film

Singer will co-star in upcoming adaptation of Anne Rice’s novel Cry to Heaven

Those hungering for a follow-up to Adele’s 30, released four years ago, might have to wait a little longer: She’s about to spend a good amount of time on a movie set, starring in her first feature film.

As announced early today, the British pop star has been cast in Cry to Heaven, a film adaptation of Anne Rice’s 1982 novel. Set to start filming in London in January, the movie also stars Colin Firth, Aaron Taylor-Johnson (most recently in Kraven the Hunter and 28 Years Later), Owen Cooper, and more, and is currently scheduled for release in late 2026.

Even though Adele has never acted onscreen before (unless you count that cameo as herself in a 2009 episode of Ugly Betty), the book and movie’s musical motif seems very much in her wheelhouse. Set in the Italian opera world of the 1700s, Rice’s novel tells the not-for-the-squeamish story of two male soprano singers who were castrated as boys in order to maintain their high voices. No word yet on which role Adele will play in the movie.

The film will be directed and co-produced by Tom Ford, the fashion designer and director of 2009’s A Single Man and 2016’s Nocturnal Animals. Ford is reportedly financing the film himself, but apparently he can afford to: In 2022, he officially became a billionaire after selling his company to  Estée Lauder.

Since wrapping up her 30 tour with a Las Vegas residency a year ago, Adele has been on a break, with no reports of new music in the works. Will she sing the Cry to Heaven theme song, as she did with Skyfall? At this point, only rumor has it.
