Hear MJ Lenderman Cover Jason Molina for Upcoming ‘I Will Swim to You’ Tribute Album

Teen Suicide, Advance Base, Hand Habits, and Sun June also cover Molina songs for the record

A Jason Molina tribute album is on its way. On Thursday, Run for Cover Records announced I Will Swim to You: a Tribute to Jason Molina, a collection of renditions honoring the late leader of alternative bands Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. The label also dropped a cover of “Just Be Simple” by MJ Lenderman and “Leave the City” by Sun June to preview the album.

The covers album, scheduled to drop on Sept. 5, is set to feature both fan favorites and deep cuts from across Molina’s discography. Among the covers are ones such as “The Old Black Hen” performed by Sadurn, “Whip Poor Will” by Teen Suicide, “Hard To Love A Man” by Friendship, and “Blue Factory Flame” by Horse Jumper of Love.

Along with becoming digitally available, fans can order one of five vinyl variants of the tribute album, with 10 percent of the profits to be donated to MusiCares, which helped Molina throughout his struggles with addiction. Fans will also be able to access a split 7″ vinyl featuring a previously unreleased recording of Molina performing “The Last 3 Human Words (Demo)” and MJ Lenderman’s “Just Be Simple” rendition on the B-side.

Molina died at age 39 of organ failure due to alcohol consumption in 2013. A prolific songwriter, Molina battled what his label called “severe alcoholism” for a decade, a struggle that came to light in 2011 with a note posted on Magnolia Electric Company’s website soliciting donations to help the uninsured musician pay his growing medical bills.

Molina’s music career began in 1996 with Songs: Ohia, a musical project he helmed that featured a rotating cast of collaborators throughout the band’s career. Their last record, 2003’s Magnolia Electric Co., was produced by Steve Albini and provided the name of Molina’s next band. Magnolia Electric Company released three official studio LPs on Secretly Canadian between 2005 and 2009.
