Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong comes out in Charli XCX ‘Brat’ hat at Coachella after their fans warred on social media

Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong came out in a ‘Brat’ hat at Coachella, seemingly squashing rumours of tensions between them and Charli XCX after their fans warred on social media.

Weekend one of the Californian festival saw Charli bring out a handful of the artists featured on the ‘Brat‘ remix album, ‘Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat‘, with her set on the Main Stage falling before Green Day’s headline slot.

Charli was later pictured at an afterparty wearing a sash that read: “Miss should be headliner”, drawing backlash from Green Day fans online, with some deeming it insensitive given punk icons using their set to address the atrocities in Palestine and take aim at Donald Trump.

Green Day’s weekend one headline performance saw them alter a ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ lyric to reference the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, with frontman Armstrong singing, “Runnin’ away from pain like the kids from Palestine/Tales from another broken home,” replacing the original line, “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimised.”

“Green day making a political statement about shit that actually matters > pop girlies singing about coke,” wrote one unimpressed fan, with more weighing in about the size of their respective audiences. “Charli xcx letting hype get to her head,” added one X/Twitter user. “Green Day used their Coachella headliner slot to speak up for good. They are still bigger than her.”

Weekend Two saw them tweak their lyrics to address political issues once again, with Armstrong taking aim at the Vice President with an updated ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ lyric, which was changed from “Am I (stupid) or am I just overjoyed?” to “Am I (stupid) or am I just J.D. Vance?” – a change he’d made to the words before, but not in front of the Coachella crowd until last night (April 19).

Another notable addition was the ‘Brat’ green hat he sported, which seemed to address the tensions that bubbled up on social media after Charli was pictured in the sash, with fans now declaring: “Green Day is Brat.”

Elsewhere, the band also surprised fans with special guest Flavor Flav, who earlier on in the day appeared with children’s TV icons Yo Gabba Gabba!. The Public Enemy founder opened Green Day’s set after revealing himself from a bunny suit, a tradition in the band’s live gigs.

With the second weekend well underway, Coachella will again be headlined by Lady Gaga, Green Day and Post Malone. The festival faced criticism last week after it was reported that fans were stuck in a “horrendous” 12-hour traffic jam to enter the festival.

Apart from complaints on social media from attendees slamming the camping conditions, many have also compared this year’s edition of Coachella to the infamous 2017 Fyre Festival – one fan wrote on X/Twitter: “coachella borderline turning into fyre fest this year…… oh i’m sat, people waiting 12-18+ hours to get in for car camping, people shitting & pissing on the sides of the line in bushes, coachella not giving anyone water while they bake in their car in line”

Other artists on the bill include Missy Elliott, Megan Thee Stallion, solo performances from BLACKPINK‘s Lisa and Jennie, Benson Boone, the original Misfits, Zedd, The Prodigy, Beabadoobee, Clairo, Enhypen and more.
