Green Day Comedy Film Inspired by Band’s Early Days Is in the Works

New Years Rev, which follows a trio of besties on a trip to open for Green Day, will also star Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey from The Office

A comedy movie involving Green Day is on its way. On Monday, Variety revealed that Live Nation Productions is producing a film titled New Years Rev, backed by and involving the rock band.

The film project written and directed by Lee Kirk will be a coming-of-age movie, which follows three friends in a band as they travel to Los Angeles thinking they’ll open for Green Day at a New Year’s Eve concert.

Actors Mason Thames (The Black Phone), Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust will play the three besties on their “rowdy and mischievous” journey to L.A, which is inspired by Green Day’s “years of living in a tour van,” according to the film’s logline.

“Van days rule. You will drive all night on no sleep then play a show for 10 kids in a basement of a friend of a friend’s house 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve ever heard of,” Billie Joe Armstrong told Variety in a statement. (The band’s Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool serve as film producers.) “But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever known.”

“It’s electric,” Armstrong added. “Let the music and mischief ensue.”

Production is already underway for the movie in Oklahoma. New Years Rev will also star Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey from The Office, along with Ignacia Diaz-Silverado and Keen Ruffalo, Mark Ruffalo’s son. Jonathan Daniel, Ryan Kroft, and Michael Rapino are tied to the project as executive producers. Tim Perell is a producer on the project for Process.

“With incredible guidance from Green Day, New Years Rev tells the story of young artists chasing a dream — long nights, endless miles, and the electrifying rush of the stage fueling their journey,” said Kroft. “Brought to life by an incredible cast, it’s a tribute to the magic of live music.”
