From Girls to Grown-Ups: XG Announce New Name to Symbolize ‘Artistic & Personal Growth’

XG, aka the Xtraordinary Girls, have grown up into extraordinary women — which means it’s time for a slight name change, according to the group.

As announced Monday (Jan. 12), the septet’s two initials will now represent “Xtraordinary Genes” instead of original name “Xtraordinary Girls.” In a release, XG’s team states that the change marks “a symbolic milestone for the group as all seven members have entered their 20s, signaling a new phase of artistic and personal growth.”

“‘Xtraordinary Genes’ represents the innate creativity, individuality and forward-thinking energy embedded within each member of XG,” the statement continues. “More than a rebrand, the shift serves as a declaration of evolution – from their starting point to the source that drives their artistry – as the group continues shaping culture without boundaries.”

Comprised of Jurin, Chisa, Hinata, Juria, Cocona, Maya and Harvey, XG debuted in 2022 with single “Tippy Toes.” Over the next two years, they’d release two EPs: New DNA (2023) and Awe (2024).

Now, the Japanese girl group’s debut full-length is on the way, with The Core coming Jan. 23. In February, XG will hit the road on a world tour in support of the album.

And though fans still have a little ways to go before the full album drops, they got the first taste of XG’s “Xtraordinary Genes” era in the form of lead single “Gala,” released in September. In a recent interview about the track and XG’s future, executive producer JAKOPS (SIMON) told Billboard Japan that the goal was to “create the greatest record in the world.”

“The seven members are growing at an astonishing, almost scary pace,” he added at the time. “It does feel like we’ve reached the end of one season.”
