Fontaines D.C. Cancel Mexico, South America Tour Dates Due to Injury

Singer Grian Chatten requires “urgent medical attention” for a herniated disc

Fontaines D.C. have pulled the plug on several upcoming tour dates in Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia. The Irish rock band announced the news last night on their Instagram Stories, with singer Grian Chatten explaining that he has suffered a herniated disc.

“I have been really excited to play these beautiful countries for years and it really hurts to be here in Mexico City and not be able to go onstage, but I have been advised today, that I require urgent medical attention,” Chatten wrote. “We are very grateful for all your support and, with all my heart, I am sorry that I can’t play for you.”

Fontaines D.C. recently finished a tour of Australia and New Zealand and were scheduled to perform in Mexico City tonight. Their upcoming tour dates included appearances at several South American editions of Lollapalooza. So far, the band is still on track to embark on their U.S. run that kicks off in April and continues through May.

After dropping their most recent LP, Romance, last year, Fontaines D.C. debuted a new song, “It’s Amazing to Be Young,” last month. In a statement, bassist Conor Deegan said the single was inspired by guitarist Carlos O’Connell’s new child. “The feeling of hope a child can give is profound and moving, especially for young men like us,” he noted. “That sense of wanting to create a world for them to grow up in happily. It’s a feeling that fights against the cynicism that can often overtake us in the modern world. So we wanted to declare which side we were on — it really is amazing to be young.”
