Finn Wolfhard shares wistful indie rock single ‘Trailers After Dark’

Finn Wolfhard has shared his wistful new indie rock single, ‘Trailers After Dark’, the latest look into his forthcoming debut album ‘Happy Birthday’.

‘Happy Birthday’ is due for release on June 6 via AWAL, and sees the Stranger Things star expand on his music career, following his brief but promising start with alternative rock band Calpurnia, which only released one EP before calling it quits in 2019. He was also one half of the pop duo The Aubreys.

‘Trailers After Dark’ sees Wolfhard deviate from the jangle pop reverie of first ‘Happy Birthday’ single ‘Choose The Latter’, towards a lo-fi Elliott Smith-styled ballad. “Oh my darling, don’t stop loving me,” he sings.

The single arrived earlier today (April 11) with a music video directed by Marcus Mazzulla, wherein Wolfhard is seen lounging on a living room couch with headphones on – all while the walls change shape and texture in stop motion-like effect. Watch it below.

Speaking about the album, Wolfhard previously shared: “I ended up writing a lot of terrible stuff, but a few of those songs I was really proud of went to the Aubreys.”

“I started realising a general theme in a lot of the other songs involving my identity, anxieties, nostalgia, childhood and loneliness. All of that was a part of a bigger puzzle. I knew I wanted to make a record, but I didn’t know with which songs.”

‘Happy Birthday’ track list:

1. ‘Happy Birthday’
2. ‘Choose The latter’
3. ‘Eat’
4. ‘Objection!’
5. ‘Everytown There’s A Darling’
6. ‘Trailers After Dark’
7. ‘Crown’
8. ‘You’
9. ‘Wait’

In a press statement, Wolfhard also discussed his acting career – which has seen him star in the hit Netflix series as well as two Ghostbusters reboots – and he explained that those creative outlets “were a way for me to establish control for myself and a little bit of peace.”

He added: “Music for me has always been something that I can control. And while I’m really grateful for acting and for a long time, it really provided me that peace, it’s just a different thing now that I’m an adult and that it’s a career.”

“I still enjoy it a lot, but when I am by myself and get to play guitar and write a song, it’s a different kind of feeling I’m after.”

Wolfhard previously told NME that he’s been taking stock of his accomplishments at a young age. “I’ve obviously been working since I was a little kid, so I’ve had conversations where people say to me, ‘your career’s just beginning’ – which is crazy, because there’s two thoughts…”, he laughs. “One is, ‘Really?! I’m pretty tired!’ The other is, ‘If this is the start of my career, shit, what do I do now!?’”

“There are so many possibilities. I’m lucky to be in the position of someone who has an open road ahead of them. I’m more at peace with the unknown and trying a bunch of weird things.”

Elsewhere, Wolfhard has also announced a string of live dates across North America. Titled the ‘Objection!’ tour, the actor/musician will kick off the run of shows on June 5 at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles before making stops in San Fransisco, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver.
