Entertainment world reacts to England winning the Women’s Euros: “It’s come home. Again”

The entertainment world has reacted to the England women’s football team winning the 2025 Euros – defending their title from three years ago.

The Lionesses were victorious in a dramatic final in Basel, Switzerland on Sunday afternoon (July 27), claiming victory over World champions Spain, winning 3-1 on penalties after the match finished 1-1 after extra time.

It meant that the team, led by Dutch manager Sarina Wiegman, have successfully defended their UEFA Euros title after also winning the same title in 2022. It also marks the first major tournament that either the men’s or women’s England football team have ever won on foreign soil.

Many took to social media after Chloe Kelly’s tournament-winning penalty hit the back of the net, including David Baddiel, the co-writer and performer of the England football anthem ‘Three Lions’.

The song, by the Lightning Seeds and Baddiel and his comedy partner Frank Skinner, has long been the signature of English international tournaments, with fans singing the familiar refrain of “football’s coming home”. To celebrate, Baddiel wrote: “It’s come home. Again.”

Other comedians to share their celebrations included Tim Key, who referenced England players Chloe Kelly, Hannah Hampton and Lucy Bronze: “Possible headlines. ‘KELLY’S HEROES’. Or maybe ‘HAMPTON CAUGHT’ or ‘BRONZE GOLD’ or ‘LIONYESS!’

In 2022, England beat Germany 2-1 after extra time to pick up their first ever major trophy, Euro 2022. Since then, they made the FIFA World Cup final in 2023, but were defeated by today’s opponents Spain 1-0.
