Dream Theater announce new album ‘Parasomnia’ with technical new track ‘Night Terror’

Dream Theater have announced their new album, ‘Parasomnia’, and have shared the blistering new track ‘Night Terror’ – find out all the details below.

Last night (October 10), the progressive metal band took to social media to announce ‘Parasomnia’, which will mark their first record with founding member and drummer Mike Portnoy since 2009’s ‘Dark Clouds & Silver Linings’.

‘Parasomnia’ will serve as the band’s 16th studio album in total and 11th with Portnoy. The album is due for release on February 7, 2025. ‘Parasomnia’ will be available for pre-order later today (October 11).

To celebrate the album’s announcement, the band have also shared a new single, ‘Night Terror’, along with its accompanying music video. The nearly 10-minute-long song sees Mike Portnoy’s technical drum style along with the rest of the band’s signature odd-time signatures.

Listen to ‘Night Terror’ below.

They wrote about the album via a press release: “This album marks the beginning of a special new chapter for us as bandmates and as brothers. This album represents not just our growth as musicians but also the journey we’ve embarked on together of the last four decades.”

Dream Theater are set to go on their first tour with Portnoy back on board this autumn to celebrate their 40th anniversary, kicking off a European tour with a show in London on October 20. Get your tickets here.

The tracklist for Dream Theater’s ‘Parasomnia’ is:

1. ‘In the Arms of Morpheus’
2. ‘Night Terror’
3. ‘A Broken Man’
4. ‘Dead Asleep’
5. ‘Midnight Messiah’
6. ‘Are We Dreaming?’
7. ‘Bend the Clock’
8. ‘The Shadow Man Incident’

In April, Portnoy told fans the band were “blown away” with the material they had so far, and teased: “We cannot wait for you all to hear this… but patience, all will be revealed in due time…”

Following a period of burnout and a desire to work on other projects back in 2010, Portnoy played with a variety of bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Sons of Apollo, Metal Allegiance, Twisted Sister, and The Winery Dogs.

Before his shock return to Dream Theater last October, Portnoy’s spot was filled by Mike Mangini. In a statement on the band’s official website following the news Portnoy was back in the fold, Mangini wrote: “I understand Dream Theater’s decision to get Mike Portnoy back at this time. As was said from Day 1, my place was not to fill all the roles that Mike held in the band. I was to play the drums in order to help the band carry on…

“To the fans: thank you so much for being amazing to me. I cherish the pictures I have of you all losing your minds and having fun. Finally, I really love the band, crew and management and wish them and the entire organisation all the best.”
