Doves’ Jimi Goodwin to debut new hip-hop project NightjaR at “one night only” Manchester show

Jimi Goodwin of the band Doves has announced a new hip-hop project called NightjaR, and announced a one off live show. Check out the details below.

The latest project is a murky, beat-driven new musical project for Goodwin, and follows on from the artist appearing on Pan Amsterdam’s second LP ‘Ha Chu’ under the guise of Coup Diablo.

The debut album from the hip-hop act is called ‘Mala Leche’, and sees the bassist, guitarist and singer flesh out a new musical direction compared to his previous work with Doves.

Music from the LP will be given a live debut at a new ‘one-night-only’ show later this month. Held next Saturday (August 23), the gig will be held at Band On The Wall in Manchester, and see Goodwin join forces with some of his favourite MCs at the moment.

With him at the one-off show will be Homeboy Sandman; Detroit’s Guilty Simpson and Quelle Chris; underground star Sonnyjim; Bronx-based MC Pruven, Cannibal Ox’s Vast Aire, and Manchester prodigy Burgundy Blood. A new press release states that Goodwin will perform and “provides musical direction for the event, together with fellow Ha Chu veteran and well known face at Band on the Wall, Agent J of Groovement.”

On the night, performances kick off at 7:30pm and tickets are on sale now. Visit here for tickets and more information.

The new project from Goodwin comes following Doves announcing a trio of intimate UK shows at the end of last year and confirming that they would be performing without the frontman as he continues to work on his mental health.

That update came shortly after they dropped the single ‘Renegades’ and announced their sixth studio album ‘Constellations For The Lonely’. Before then, the members were forced to pull the tour for the record so that frontman Jimi Goodwin could focus on his mental health.

“I’m not going out live this time,” Goodwin told NME at the time. “The door’s not closed on that chapter; I just have to honour my sobriety and do what I need to in order to maintain that. I’m not ready to perform yet.”

He added: “You’ve not heard the last of me performing again with Doves.”

Last week, Doves announced that they would be celebrating nearly three decades together by sharing an upcoming ‘Best Of’ album and more UK tour dates. The new record is called  ‘So, Here We Are’ and is to be released on multiple formats on November 14 via EMI North. Visit here to pre-order.
