Doja Cat Mocks Sydney Sweeney’s Controversial American Eagle Jeans Commercial

Doja Cat is having a laugh over Sydney Sweeney’s new campaign with American Eagle, which has been sparking heated online controversy for its messaging.

In a TikTok posted Tuesday (July 29), the rapper recites the Euphoria star’s script from a recent commercial for the fashion brand word for word — but instead of matching Sweeney’s sensual tone and vocal fry in the original ad, Doja says the lines in an exaggerated backwoods accent.

“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color,” the hitmaker says in the clip. “My jeans are blue.”

Billboard has reached out to reps for Sweeney and American Eagle for comment.

Doja’s post is just the latest drop in a wave of discourse surrounding the actress’ American Eagle campaign, which started rolling out about a week ago. In various commercials, Sweeney boasts about having “great jeans” and “great genes,” using the phrases interchangeably. Many viewers have called this messaging problematic given the added focus on Sweeney’s blue eyes and blonde hair in the ads, with some comparing them to racist Nazi propaganda of decades past.

Sweeney has not yet addressed the controversy, nor has American Eagle. It’s not the first time in recent history the White Lotus alum has faced backlash for an ad campaign. In June, the sale of a Dr. Squatch bar soap containing her actual bathwater in the formula was widely criticized as as being antifeminist.

Doja’s post on the jeans situation comes as she’s gearing up to release new album Vie, which will mark her first LP since 2023’s Scarlet. Earlier in July, she confirmed that the project — which she previously confirmed is “pop-driven” in terms of its sound — is officially finished.
