David Gilmour announces ‘Live At Circus Maximus, Rome’ live movie

David Gilmour has announced a new concert film that will showcase his ‘Live At Circus Maximus, Rome’ shows.

The forthcoming film follows on from the Pink Floyd legend heading out on his ‘The Luck And Strange’ tour dates last year.

Those shows came in celebration of his fifth solo album of the same title, which topped the charts in the UK, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Portugal and Austria, and made the Top 10 in the USA.

Gilmour kicked off the tour dates with two warm-up shows at the Brighton Centre, before heading over to the historic Circus Maximus in Rome for six sold-out nights. He followed this up with shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall, LA’s Hollywood Bowl, and New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Set alongside the backdrop of the ancient ruins of Rome, the footage of the shows was captured by long-time Gilmour collaborator Gavin Elder. It will be released via Sony Music Vision and Trafalgar Releasing, and shown in cinemas & IMAX worldwide for a limited time from September 17.

Tickets go on sale on August 6 at 2pm BST/ 9am EDT / 6am PDT. Visit here for more information.

As well as getting a cinema release, the ‘Live At The Circus Maximus’ shows will also be shared as two Blu-Ray and three DVD sets, along with unseen footage and audio mixed in 5.1 and Atmos. This will be shared on October 17.

Titled ‘The Luck And Strange Concerts’, the release features 23 tracks across four LPs or two CDs recorded at selected shows. The tracklist includes solo songs from the guitarist’s latest album, as well as renditions of Pink Floyd classic tracks ‘Sorrow’, ‘High Hopes’, ‘Breathe (In The Air)’, ‘Time’, ‘Wish You Were Here’, and ‘Comfortably Numb’.

A super deluxe edition also comes with a 120-page hardback book, which features photography from Polly Samson, taken on the tour. Audio for both ‘The Luck And Strange Concerts’ and ‘Live At The Circus Maximus, Rome’ was co-produced by David and Charlie Andrew, who also co-produced the original album.

The release comes following a 4K restoration of the classic 1972 film Pink Floyd At Pompeii MCMLXXII – and its 2025 soundtrack remix by Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson – being shared in May.

NME awarded that concert film four stars in a review. “As such, Pink Floyd At Pompeii: MCMLXXII captures a moment that’s as bygone as the good citizens of Pompeii themselves,” it read. “Here was an uncompromising, visionary band who, over the four years since losing their frontman Syd Barrett, had been given several avant-garde experimental albums to explore their new identity.”

Gilmour made his final album with the band, ‘The Endless River’, in 2014 – a work that arrived 20 years after their last work on ‘The Division Bell’, which was meant to be the band’s final goodbye to fans.

That record included contributions from drummer Nick Mason and some archived recordings from keyboardist Richard Wright, who died in 2008. Rogers Waters had left the band in 1985 and did not return for any of these recording sessions.

There is little chance of a full-blown Pink Floyd reunion happening, as there has been tension between Gilmour and Waters for decades now. Their disagreements erupted again in 2023 when Gilmour accused Waters of anti-Semitism. Waters also vowed never to perform with Waters again.

Last year, Gilmour didn’t speak highly of his work on ‘The Endless River’ either, claiming that he was “bullied” into making it.
