Coldplay Drop Colorful, Immersive Trailer for ‘A Film for the Future’

The companion movie to the group’s album Moon Music was pieced together from the work of more than 150 visual artists

Coldplay will release a companion movie to their album Moon Music. A Film for the Future premieres Jan. 22 on YouTube and, from the looks of the trailer, it’s a wild and colorful ride.

A Film for the Future was pieced together from the submissions of visual artists from around the globe, who were asked to create art to complement Moon Music after listening to sections of the album. In the end, content from 150 artists from 45 countries was used to make the final cut, which also premieres with “360-degree screenings” at Lightroom venues in London and Manchester, England, and Seoul, South Korea.

“We’re very grateful to all the amazing artists who lent their genius to this film. They’ve created something very beautiful and we’re extremely proud of it,” the members of Coldplay said in a statement.

A Film for the Future was executive produced by Ben Mor (the director of the band’s video with Beyoncé, “Hymn for the Weekend”). In a release, he called the project “a kaleidoscopic patchwork quit — a 44-minute multimedia tapestry.”

In a Rolling Stone cover story, Coldplay’s Chris Martin talked about how he and his bandmates have allowed themselves the freedom to pursue any creative path. “There’ve been times where we [were like], ‘Well, we should probably try and look a bit like this or talk a bit like that,’ ” Martin said. “And now, it’s just like, ‘No.’ Just follow whatever’s being sent. And that’s a very liberating place to be. If you want a puppet to sing a bit of a song, well, some people might not like this — my mum being one of them, for example. But my point is, that’s part of my journey to be like, ‘Well, I love you, and this is what we’re doing.’ ”
