Classic FM announces new show celebrating video game music

Classic FM has confirmed a new show celebrating the legacy of video game soundtracks.

Classic FM typically plays the music of Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach and Straus but Next Level will share music from iconic video game scores. The programme will be presented by YouTuber DanTDM.

Across the series DanTDM will “showcase the greatest gaming music, packed into each 60-minute programme.” The first episode airs this Saturday (January 11) and will “celebrate gaming’s most legendary soundtracks, including The Legend Of Zelda, Final Fantasy 7, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, Street Fighter 2 and Minecraft”.

Next Level will air every Saturday evening on Classic FM between 9pm and 10pm until Easter. It will also be available to stream for 7 days after broadcast via the official Classic FM app.

“Teenage me wouldn’t be able to believe I have my own radio show! Having studied music production at university and then worked in video games for the past 15 years, being given a show that celebrates the meeting of these two worlds feels totally surreal,” DanTDM said in a statement. “Classic FM is such an iconic station and I’m really grateful and excited to have been given this opportunity.”

DanTDM currently has more than 29million subscribers on YouTube, where he mostly shares Minecraft content.

Classic FM’s managing editor Philip Noyce added: “This is a very exciting day for Classic FM. Watched by millions, DanTDM is a huge star in the gaming world, as well as being a fan of classical music.

“Across three months, he will not only showcase the greatest video game music to our loyal listeners, but with Dan at the controls, we’re looking forward to welcoming video game music fans to Classic FM for the first time too. We have always championed new forms of classical music, from film scores to gaming soundtracks, so I’m pleased to announce this next chapter in our support of video game music.”

In 2017, Classic FM broadcast the UK’s first dedicated video game music series with High Score.
