Circa Waves dream of “packed sweaty indie clubs” on new single ‘Like You Did Before’

Circa Waves have released a propulsive new single titled ‘Like You Did Before’ – inspired by frontman Kieran Shudall’s experience undergoing a heart operation that involved imagining himself in “packed sweaty indie clubs”.

The indie rock band issued the track on Monday (December 9) with a music video, featuring its members tracking music in the studio – it follows up September’s ‘We Made It’. Both tracks will be included in the band’s upcoming sixth album ‘Death & Love, Part 1’, due January 31, 2025 via Lower Third.

In a press statement, Shudall spoke about the song, which he called “a reminder of a moment in my life that many people don’t know about”.

“Just before my heart operation lying in hospital when life felt uncertain and fragile, I would imagine myself in a packed sweaty indie club, dancing like my life depended on it,” he continued.

“It was a daydream, a form of escape and this song fits perfectly into that vision.” Watch the music video for ‘Like You Did Before’ below.

Circa Waves were forced to cancel several shows in January 2023 when Shuddall was urgently admitted to hospital for surgery for viral pericarditis, an inflammation of the heart. The success of the operation and his subsequent live-for-the-moment mindset has deeply influenced the revivified new album, due on January 31.

“I thought I might die before I made this record,” Shuddall told NME in a recent interview, “and then I didn’t, and I got to make an album of music that I loved. The shackles were off, in a way, because I had this newfound joy and excitement for being alive.”

He continued: “Now that’s happened, I look forward to everything a lot more. The idea of going to play another tour or release another record, it’s given me that excitement back.”

“This is our sixth album, and I was just so buzzing to go in the studio again and make music with my friends, because you can become a little bit complacent through the years. Everything feels fresh again, which is quite cool. It’s a weird byproduct of thinking you might die.”

Circa Waves will also embark on a UK headline tour in February. Visit here for tickets and more information.
