The musician has also revealed the tracklist for her new album, ‘Everybody Needs A Hero’, which is set for release on October 4 via Friends – you can pre-order it here.

Speaking about the track, Gatland said:  “‘Late To The Party’ is a big old bratty song about resenting the baggage that you inherit when you love someone and yearning for a time when we were all a blank slate.

“I wanted a song on the record that shifted in pace a lot, something fun and loud, something indulgent. I first wrote ‘Late To The Party’ over a couple of solo sittings in my studio, mumbling out the lyrics while playing drums.

“A few months later I sent the song to Declan – for me he is one of the absolute greats, a properly timeless artist & writer. We worked on the song remotely at first, sending stems back & forth and then jumped in the studio for a day to dismantle the song & put it all back together. Dec’s parts & energy added so much to the track for me and after months of revisiting it ‘Late To The Party’ was suddenly complete.”

The ‘Everybody Needs A Hero’ tracklisting is:

‘Both Can Be True’
‘Sound Of Letting Go’
‘Little Chaos’
‘Backseat Driver’
‘The Hit’
‘Simple’
‘Late To The Party’ feat. Declan McKenna
‘Three Words Away’
‘Kiss UR Face Forever’
‘Who Am I?’
‘Mine’
‘Everybody Needs A Hero’

Gartland has also announced details of an “intimate album preview show” at London’s Hoxton Hall on September 3. Tickets for Hoxton Hall go on general sale at 10am BST on August 29 and are available here.

Additionally, the singer will embark on her first-ever North American headline tour later this year. She’ll play 13 shows across the US and Canada, including performances at New York’s Bowery Ballroom and LA’s Troubadour. Find any remaining tickets here.

Speaking to NME recently about working with McKenna, Gartland said: “I’ve always definitely been quite precious, I never wanted to add someone unless I felt like they’re really bringing something to the party. But I just love Dec, I think he’s one of the most exciting artists to come out of the UK ever. I just think he’s a proper, proper artist; unrelenting, has a vision, [and] releases so much music.

“He’s so prolific, and I think he just has such a classic vibe to me. He’s Bowie, but he’s also The Beatles, and he’s Queen. He’s gives me legacy artist vibes, even though he’s in this time, and I’ve always found that really exciting. I think he’s the real deal. So I was more than delighted when he was up for singing the bridge and coming in, and he contributed guitar parts, he brought so much to the track.”

‘Everybody Needs A Hero’ will also feature the previously released singles, ‘The Hit‘,  ‘Little Chaos’, ‘Mine’ and ‘Kiss Ur Face Forever’. The forthcoming album delves into Gartland’s longterm relationship and “works out how to take up space in a postfeminist world”.

The artist explored the idea of a ‘hero’ with the full-length project, which was created between her London studio and Middle Farm Studios in Devon. Gartland worked with longtime collaborators Tom Stafford and Peter Miles in co-producing the LP.

Gartland’s debut album ‘Woman On The Internet’ peaked at Number 10 in the UK, and Number Three in Ireland. In a three-star review of the record, NME said the songs “feel like the ambitious work of an artist broadening their scope”.

It added: “[…] ‘Woman On The Internet’ is a hard-won celebration of perseverance and artistic freedom, and of Gartland finally being able to frame her success in her own way.”
