Charlie Puth shares Wham!-inspired Christmas single ‘December 25th’

Charlie Puth has released a new Christmas single ‘December 25th’, inspired by Wham!’s classic ‘Last Christmas’. Check out the track below.

The 32-year-old New Jersey popstar has not released a studio album since 2022’s ‘Charlie’, but did release the single ‘Hero’ in May this year.

Now, he has shared his contribution to the 2024 festive season in the form of ‘December 25th’, which opens with a pulsing synth line that is closely reminiscent of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley’s vintage 1984 single. Listen here:

Speaking about the track, Puth wrote: “I wrote and recorded ‘December 25’ completely on a whim a few weeks ago in my studio while working on my new album, and though it sounds absolutely nothing like anything on the album, I figured why not share it for the holidays. So here you go.”

Puth made headlines earlier in the year after being on the end of a shout out on Taylor Swift’s album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’.

On the record’s title track, Swift sings: You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate / We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.”

Puth responded to the song by thanking Swift and crediting her for inspiring him to write “one of the hardest songs” he’s ever written.

“My new song ‘HERO’ is about when you see someone you love hurting themselves, ruining the things in their life that are good, but you just can’t save them. It’s one of the hardest songs I’ve ever had to write, but I wrote it in hopes that you’ve gone through something similar in your life, and that it can fill in the BLANK for you like it did for me.

“I’m very excited to share my next album with you, especially this song because it’s a great representation of what’s to come. I’ve never put out a song like this before – it’s very different for me, but I want to thank Taylor Swift for letting me know musically that I just couldn’t keep this on my hard drive any longer. Thank you to all of my fans – you’ll never know how much you mean to me…”

The Internet also reacted to the name drop, with one user writing: “’We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist’ is truly the last thing I thought I’d ever hear Taylor Swift sing in a Taylor Swift song.”

This summer, Puth also released a single with Stray Kids called ‘Lose My Breath’, which was said to be a “warm-up” for an upcoming Korean album by the group.
