Charli XCX was the first person to reach out to Chappell Roan about pressures of fame: “This is about to get really hard”

Chappell Roan has revealed that Charli XCX was the first person to reach out to her about the pressures of fame.

During one of her soundcheck Q&As ahead of her show at the 3Olympia Theatre in Dublin on Tuesday (September 17), Roan was asked what her favourite track from XCX’s sixth studio album ‘Brat‘ was. After answering with ‘Sympathy Is A Knife’, the ‘Casual’ singer went on to share how XCX was the first person to reach out to and check on her following her public comments on her issues with fame.

“I love Charli so much. She was like the first girl to reach out and check on me. She was like ‘Hi, this is about to get really hard and if you need a friend, I’ll be here for you’. So it’s just so sick to see her just ruling the fucking world and doing it her way,” she said.

She continued: “I think so many people have tried to put her in a pop box of like ‘she’s a pop star’ and like she is but she’s like a club girl and is fully living. She’s fueling the fantasy and it’s working because it’s her and it’s so inspiring to me. She’s just, I am so proud of her for ‘Brat’ and I can’t wait to see her and Troye [Sivan]’s show.”

Roan has been vocal about her experiences of fame in recent months. She recently took to TikTok to share her thoughts on “weird” and “creepy” fan behaviour, questioning why people felt they could yell at her from their car, get mad at her for refusing to take photos, stalk her, or otherwise harass her because of her celebrity status.

The ‘Red Wine Supernova’ singer previously shared that Lorde had reached out to share her own experiences dealing with fame and negativity at a young age. “She sent me a list of things I should do,” Roan said. “Literally wrote down eight things she wished someone would have told her when she was going through it. And she went through fucking hell. She was a baby!”

Madison Beer also recently weighed in on Roan’s comments about dealing with fame and fans, telling NME that she thinks “a lot of people have taken what [Roan] said wrong.”

“How I took it was she was talking about the people who do things that are inherently wrong, like sit outside of her house or follow her home from an event,” she explained. “You can’t do that to people, you have to allow people to be human. And I think we forget that people, like our favourite artists, are human beings at the end of the day.”

Beer went on to say “I don’t think she’s ungrateful for her fans,” and added: “People have said, ‘You signed up for this. You have to deal with it now.’ And I think that’s not true. Just because she makes music and people might like it, it doesn’t mean that she signed up for that.”

Elsewhere, Mitski welcomed Roan to “the shittiest exclusive club in the world” and warned her of the downsides of her meteoric rise.

In a snippet of a lengthy email sent by Mitski, the ‘Francis Forever’ singer wrote sympathetically to Roan: “I just wanted to humbly welcome you to the shittiest exclusive club in the world, the club where strangers think you belong to them and they find and harass your family members.”

Other artists who have reached out to the former NME Cover star in support include Billie Eilish, Katy Perry, MUNA, Miley Cyrus, boygenius, and Sabrina Carpenter.

Roan is currently on the UK and European leg of her tour which will see her play a three-night run at London’s O2 Academy Brixton starting tonight (September 19).

In other news, the singer was announced as one of the first five performers of season 50 of Saturday Night Live. Roan will be performing on the iconic comedy sketch show on November 2 with John Mulaney serving as the night’s host.
