Charli XCX to Star in, Produce Horror Director Takashi Miike’s Next Film

It’s one of many forthcoming movie projects from the Brat singer

Charli XCX has joined forces with Japanese horror director Takashi Miike for a yet-untitled film.

According to Variety, the pop star will star in and produce the project, the second under her new Studio365 banner. Although there is no word on the plot, Miike is known for his violent works, including 1999’s Audition and 2001’s Ichi the Killer, so a horror-leaning movie is likely in the cards. It is being written by screenwriter Ross Evans.

Charli XCX has been splitting her focus between music and acting in recent years. The Brat musician is producing and starring in upcoming A24 movie The Moment from director Aidan Zamiri. Charli developed the original idea the film is based on, which was adapted into a screenplay by Zamiri and Bertie Brandes.

The singer will appear in several other films, including Julia Jackman’s 100 Nights of Hero alongside Nicholas Galitzine and Emma Corrin and Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex alongside Olivia Wilde. Last summer, she shot the Pete Ohs-directed movie Erupcja in Poland.

“The way [Ohs] talked about making his films felt akin to making an album and the chance meeting also felt equivalent to the conversational and spontaneous nature of his filmmaking,” Charli XCX said of the film. “Our processes felt linked in some kind of way and it felt right and exciting to pursue some kind of collaboration.”

Ohs added, “Charli is an excellent actress. She is a performer. She understands what it’s like to have a camera pointed at her. She understands how to convey things through all the different ways in which we communicate, whether it’s with body language or your voice or your facial expressions.”

Charli XCX previously has stuck to voiceover roles. She voiced Willow in The Angry Birds Movie in 2016 and Kitty in UglyDolls in 2019. Her last tie to a film was with Bottoms, which she worked on as a composer alongside Leo Birenberg.

Earlier this month, Charli XCX stopped by Coachella for a raucous set that included guest appearances from her buds Lorde, Billie Eilish, and Troye Sivan. She is set for numerous other festival performances, including Primavera Sound Porto and Lido Festival.
